It's tempting to start a counter petition to keep him there.
    Oh I don't know.

        edit - didn't quote Dom's question

no - i have my theory - i reckon United as club/company know they're at the end of their cycle in terms of off the field managment structure (Gill), management (ferguson) and end of an era player wise (only a few left of the golden era etc)

they are possibly facing a full restructure from top to bottom - and haven't got the cash to sustain a mourinho style restructure ie, pay mourinho a ridiculous wage, and then bank roll him with £200m over the next two or three windows.

i reckon with their reported debt and all the changes that will be needed, they as a company are going to be quite happy to slowly downgrade/downsize and lower expectation a bit and try and find a level where they are sustainable in terms of doing the bare minimum to finish top four, sign reasonable players cheap etc -

a bit like we were going through under hicks and gillette - i reckon the united board are happy with the success they have had and would be quite happy with a few 'cheap' years where they still 'compete' still fill the stadium, but don't spend ridiculous amounts doing it

Moyes is the first step in this direction

How long do we give it before the first story appears of Fergie making a shock return?

it's all down to results - i will say as soon as they lose three games in a row or maybe go five games without a win

that could be this month/next month next year but when it happens it will kick off

just looking at their fixtures -

What is funny is after the international break they have 5 games in 15 days thats really going to test the squad

they have Palace at home on the 14th Sept and then West Brom at Home 28th Sept - both games they should win

but sandwiched inbetween those two games is the crunch time!!!

              Home in CL to Leverkusen
Away to Man City Premier league
              Home to Liverpool League cup

massive massive for them that - could break them early - first time the squad strength is tested, moyes's first go at a champions league tie, followed by massive premier league game away to City and then us

3 losses in those games could cause all sorts to kick off

                I reckon he's just a puppet.

They know whoever succeeds Fergie will fail. It's inevitable. As much as I hate the ******* he as an amazing legacy no-one can live up to.

So they've got a fall guy who can easily be controlled.

Fergie's probably still there in the background pulling the strings.

When it all crashes they get a new manager for a fresh start.

yeah thats kinda the point i was getting at

a big name appointment would have wanted **** loads in wages, they also would have the brains and foresight to recognise the aging squad and would want guarentees in place that they are going to be allowed to spend big to rebuild.

United board prob think no way can we afford that -

but with moyes in, he's a puppet, he can drag the last few ounces out of the oldies and we will let him bring in one or two - we'll have a few years of decline but it will save us pounds

                  Moyes will take the hit

then a few years down the line we'll have the money in place to start a rebuild and replace moyes with a better manager and give him the budget to rebuild properly

Because Mourinho is a self obsessed **** who would only work as short term appointment but Utd obviously want a long term plan

I read this, but thought about Benny Hill. So I imagined Moyes running around Benny Hill style trying to get players to sign.

Bilbao newspaper El Correo have this morning compared Manchester United's pursuit of Ander Herrera to a Benny Hill sketch. They question whether such a scenario would have happened under Sir Alex Ferguson and call the club's approach 'sloppy' and 'irresponsible'. There are no punches being pulled in Bilbao.
It's claimed that Manchester United have come out of this looking so bad that it will actually help Ander Herrera be re-accepted by fans of Athletic Club Bilbao. Such is the amazement at how Manchester United have behaved - bear in mind this is Bilbao leaned reporting - Herrera is being seen as a victim by many, rather than someone who tried his best to desert the club. His team mates are rallying around him and supporters haven't launched a hate campaign, there's been no insulting graffiti like there was with Llorente and it looks like a Bilbao closure of ranks with a big finger pointing toward Manchester.

The newspaper again says that the problem was purely down to Manchester United not offering enough money for the player and not wanting to meet his release clause, something we covered yesterday. Manchester United apparently contacted Herrera in mid August, so the whole thing isn't as last minute as it perhaps seems. However, even a couple of weeks was probably too short an amount of time to get Athletic to play ball, and that's assuming Manchester United aren't totally at fault.
El Correo says that the new people dealing with transfers at Manchester United didn't have the relevant experience and expected Athletic would reduce their demands at the death. They insist that Laffer (the law firm called all kinds of names since) were acting on behalf of Manchester United, and they back that up with quotes from an unnamed source at the Spanish league.

The newspaper also claim they spoke to a source at Laffer who claimed they'd received an apology from Manchester United yesterday. We spoke to the law firm on Tuesday and it was clear they were frustrated with the situation but they are unlikely to be critical of a football club (Whether that be Manchester United or Athletic), they get a lot of business from them.
Yesterday our own Tom Coast covered an alternative report from Spain that the transfer fell down mainly due to Athletic and their reluctance to play ball. The Spanish journalist who claimed that is now trying to backtrack and fall in-line with what others in the country are reporting, which makes the situation even more complicated.
It's safe to say that everyone has a chunk of blame here with the probable exception of Laffer, and it's the legal firm who were mocked the most in the aftermath.
