Another one Moyes can forget about

Athletic Bilbao say they have turned down an offer from Manchester United for midfielder Ander Herrera.

Club president Josu Urrutia claims a firm bid for the 24-year-old was lodged on Thursday and immediately dismissed.

And Urrutia says the only way Herrera will leave the club is if he demands a move and his release clause - reported to be £30.75m - is met.

Speaking at a press conference, reported on Athletic's Twitter feed on Friday, he said: "We have had an offer for Ander Herrera. Our club is different, it is based on sentiment. Our objective isn't to make money.

"We received the offer last night and have communicated that we will not negotiate for our players.

"For a player to go, first the player must express his desire to leave the club and pay the release clause."

David Moyes, asked about Herrera at his press conference ahead of Sunday's game against Liverpool, was not prepared to name United's targets.

He said: "We would try not to disclose our bids, if that's possible. We would just let the clubs deal with it and try to do it in the professional manner."

On the difficulty of signing players in general, Moyes added: "It was going to be a struggle because I was coming into a new job and was getting to know the players.

"There was a new chief executive at the club as well so it was always going to take it a little bit of time to settle down. But we have been in and around the players we wanted to sign.

"We have been after two or three players and tried to go for them. Some of them we are still in with a shout with and some we are not. It might be busy in the next few days and I hope we do a little bit of business but I couldn't guarantee it."

He's a really good footballer but never struck me as a £30m player.

Doesn't De Rossi have a serious knee problem?

Allegedly. Not serious but it a problem.

He was top class a couple of seasons ago but hasn't been the same player since he picked up that.

Yep, that's true. Usually buyout clauses for foreign clubs are more like advertised prices (except when they're symbolic ala Messi/Ronaldo). And it only applies to Spanish clubs so long as the seller welcomes the bid - if they don't want to sell the selling club forces the buyer to pay VAT on top of it. And if they really want to be difficult about it, they won't break the contract until the player (not the buying club) pay it, since it is technically a buyout clause and not a release clause, so the buying club would have to transfer the player the money which would then be taxed as income.

Bayern somehow got around it with Javi Martinez (or Bilbao want everyone to think they got around it and gave them no choice, but really just realized €40m for Martinez was good business).

After today's result / performance they're going to panic and spend silly money on someone like Fellaini

We dont have money to buy imho, all these news on trying to buy fabregas fellani etc are just for shows
If trying to buy Fellaini is for show, what would the show be called? Low expectations?

Thought they were really poor today, bereft of ideas and never looked like scoring.

If they're the best team in the league then the quality really is poor.

Was he injured or is it Moyes fear of a creative midfielder playing central?

Kagawa is quality the sort of player who can sit in behind RVP and feed him in all day.
