I've got links and a few extra details, but it pretty much backs what you're saying.

Am I correct in saying that around the time of leaving Madrid, he held a press conference to update people on his situation, and he actually said at the time that he'd only move to Newcastle if it were a loan deal?

Or am I making that up? Swear I remember seeing it at the time.

It was something along those lines.

Owen had said he would only play for the Magpies on a one-year loan deal but he has been convinced to sign permanently in a coup for the club.

The 25-year-old claims he has agreed to join Newcastle "but only on a one-year loan" and providing neither of his other two preferred options comes to fruition before the transfer window closes on Wednesday.
But Souness has made it clear a loan deal is not an option.

"It's no secret who his first and second choice are," said the Newcastle boss, whose side have still not scored in the Premiership this season.

Cheers buddy. Thought that was the case.

Never scored more than 20 league goals in a season.

          Never will now.

In a 38 game league season anything above 17 is a decent return.
I bet he didn't play all the league game in any of those season either.

People shouldn't just cunt him off, if you're too young then get on YouTube and look at what he was like for us.
For 6-7 years we were as relient on him as were Torres and are Suarez today.

Houllier ruined him, forcing him back early from hamstring injuries only for him to break down again and again.
The fact that the longest spell in his career was in Madrid as a squad player where he still scored regularly tells you his body couldn't stand the rigors or regular football.

All the more baffling that he chose Newcastle, Rafa would have rotated him and looked after him injury wise and Madrid was perfect for him to stay there, start 1 in 3 games and score regularly.

Having said all that his penalty away to Portsmouth in his last season (I think) was the worst I have ever seen taken at any level.
The King was back for a short while. Long live The King.

It's interesting that Owen is hated for almost running down his contract and leaving for a pittance, but Torres is equally hated when leaving at the absolute maximum value we could have hoped to get.

              Funny how it works eh?
              Oh I don't know.

agree big time with that comment. Wasn't Fowler quoted saying something similar.... to be honest, Houllier ruined many players - Fowler was brilliant but there is no doubt in my mind that he could have been far better had we a better manager - same goes for Owen, Heskey, Litmanen, Murphy.......even players like Biscan, Traore, Vignal, Kirkland, Dudek all had huge potential.....drained out of them by GED's 'thou-shall-not-express-yourself' policy....which made his gate-crash of the dressing room at Istanbul all the more embarrassing for him.....

When you look at the improvement in a lot of players as soon as Rafa took over (players like Finnan, Riise, Baros) then I really really regret the fact that Owen and Danny Murphy didn't stick it out for another year....i reckon they would both have ended up staying at Anfield till last summer!!

Even Gerrard and Carragher...........its down to Rafa that Stevie G was in the best 5 midfielders in Europe for the last 8 years or so........and Carragher was up there for a period too - would never have happened under Houllier....

They both left when the club didn't want them to go.....

If you remember Souness's interview on Goals on Sunday about being manager of Liverpool. He said a few senior players came to him when he took over and said they were offered long contracts elsewhere and could they go. Souness got angry with them and thought "this is Liverpool......you don't leave Liverpool.....so if that is your attitude, then you can f**k off".... he said he regrets that and should have made them stay....

i can only assume that he means the likes of Houghton, Staunton etc......i think Barnes was linked with Villa as well but injury put that to bed.....

That the difference between us and teams like Man United, Barcelona, Madrid though. They are seen as the pinnacle - you can't go further.... whereas we are half a level below that......... (although not in Gerrard's eyes!)

One point to make as well though....... look at Owen, McManaman, Torres..... they all thought that they were going onto better things..... they all probably earned more money and they all went onto win leagues, cups and champions leagues with their new teams........

But i bet they all, deep down, wished they stayed at Liverpool.....

Newcastle was a very bad choice. After the move he lost it really, turned into a proper thug culminating in this vicious assault on Arteta. Should have retired then for the safety of his fellow professionals really.

I don't hate him, I appreciate what he did in his time here and I think he regrets leaving us more than we regret him going, (although I doubt he'd admit it).
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

It's not Torres' price that make us hate him, it's who he left for, and the slagging he did of us afterwards.
