Isn't the fee fixed though if they stay up?

Nope, we caved in on that to get his wages off the books this season... They're under no obligation to buy at any price.

I'm still screwy over the fact we signed him in the first place, he's never been worth much more than 10 million. I remember sitting at my desk doing my nut on deadline day as the press reported we were in for him for 25 million, let alone the extra we ended up paying.

Why, is there anyone that believes he isn't?

Carroll is worth around £12m, we paid £35m

Downing is worth around £7m, we paid £20m

I agree that those two go down as the worst transfers in the history of football as I can't think of any others with a 300% mark-up.

Yes, I am still totally bitter about it

                  Torres???

Torres is not the player he was but Chelsea weren't to know that. No-one could have really predicted it especially at his age.

He's still a much better player than Andy Carroll, unfortunately.

He's even worse than I thought he was when we signed him. I like the guy and he's capable of occasionally causing problems, but he's so limited. £35m. **** me. I was *stunned* that day and even with the passing of time, it still remains stunning, shocking and difficult to accept. £35m for the white Michael Ricketts.

A player is only worth how desperate the buying club is.

Heskey is an example, Liverpool agreed with Leicester an agreed and reasonable fee of 7m to purchase at the end of the season. Circumstances changed (injuries if I remember) and Liverpool went back and asked for him early, this knock on effect (nobody yet bought to replace him) caused Leicester to bump up the price to 11m, we were desperate to get him so it cost many more pennies than originally agreed.

It will be interesting to see if Commolli and Kenny will ever be taken seriously again for another top job.

My recollection was £10.5m agreed with Leicester adding an extra £500k when we got him early.

But you're right, a player is only worth what a buying club will offer.

RE: Carroll, he looked a beast at times when at Newcastle, I was pleased when he signed albeit he was hideously overpriced. Also baffling why Big Sam hasn't been able to unlock that NUFC player (yet). Hopefully once the first couple go in he goes on a run and we can look to recoup £15m from the failed transfer.

I don't believe he ever got a fair run of things with us (FA Cup final is but one example) but that's besides the point now, we're in damage limitation and need to try and minimise loses on him.

So, who has been the worst buy? Torres at £50m or Carroll at £35m?
