Roy Hodgson walked into the team meeting two hours before kick-off and delivered a blunt, unexpected message.

'Listen, I will put my cards on the table,' he said. 'This is going to be a* very tough game - I will take a draw right now.'

This was not Hodgson's pep talk in Kiev last month. This was Hodgson, speaking as Liverpool manager, in October 2010 at the team hotel before an important Europa League game in Naples. We had been on a dreadful run going into that match and travelled with a depleted squad.

It is rare to hear a manager be so blunt. Some would say it sounded defeatist. But, I have to admit, I admired Hodgson's honesty.

Ultimately, we got the job done. We held a Napoli side spearheaded by Edinson Cavani, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik to a 0-0 draw. We then finished the job at Anfield a few weeks later, beating Napoli 3-1 thanks to a Steven Gerrard hat-trick.
