Gibbo was saying that if you had to choose between a better manager from another country and a lesser one from here. Name us one very good English manager who could do a better job than say Capello?
Errrr because its International football we are talking about. If the players are supposed to be the best we as a nation can put together than surely the manager should be included in that? Its not hard to understand.
No, I understand - I just don't agree. A lot of international footballers have tenuous links to the nation they are representing, where do we draw the line? Blood tests and family trees before you can have three lions on your chest?
I think Hodgson is fairly **** and his club record doesn't come close to Capello. Its not a competition of who is best between them. I just think if football is to proceed with this charade of international football then the manager and coaching staff should be from the same country. Nothing will EVER change my opinion on this.
Pardew is clearly a massive tosser. Albeit with a nice smiley face. Allerdyce is a money hungry member of the old boys club. Sherwood, Hughton and Bruce are still fairly inexperienced at any sort of level.
Sherwood could do something though, seems a bit more pragmatic than at the start. He just sounds thick as ****, which is a problem for people.
Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, how many coaches have they had in charge that don't come from their own country?
Yet nearly half of the teams in the World Cup this year will be led out by foreign mangers (15 out of 32). Sure, previous World Cup winning managers have been of the same nationality, but football is changing.

Better job? that's a question that cannot be answered with any fact. capello didn't actually achieve much in terms of competition progression which ultimately all england managers are judged upon. I think Redknapp would have made a triffic England manager, but that is NOT me saying that he's a better manager than Capello because he clearly isn't. But I fail to see how Redknapp would have led England to a worse position in South Africa than Capello. He was at that time and when Roy was chosen the best choice for the job. I know plenty on here don't like the bloke. Accepted. I actually think the players would have actually gone out with a smile on their faces and enjoyed playing under Redknapp. But the overiding factor is he is english & capello is not. I'm english so when it comes to Englands football team my choice isn't hard to understand surely.

I agree with Bobs argument though, but it would need to be a universal rule to have a national coach from that country. If no one else does, I dont see why we should at the moment. Although it is preferable to me.
All the manager needs to be is competent enough to send out a team to win a game. He doesnt need to be able to get players in, develop them or anything.
Thats why paying Capello (Who is an outstanding manager) was totally crazy. He did nothing to further the national set up at youth level. So he was just paid to pick a squad every couple of months for 3 years.

If it was as easy as picking a team and sending them out to play, Howard Wilkinson would still be in charge. Capello was the right manager available at that time - it's not his fault the FA threw money at him. England needed an authoritarian. More so, England players needed discipline; they were the so called 'golden generation' and McClaren was ****ing it up. They needed somebody that would pick a squad on merit rather than be influenced by friends and media. So Capello came in, blitzed the qualifying group and lost his way at a World Cup. The 'golden generation' wasn't as good as all the hype. So rather than point fingers at grass roots football in England and the FA's role in this, they made an escape goat of the foreign manager. It was disgusting ... but I digress.
You ask what Capello did at youth level? What has Hodgson done? I don't believe it's in their remit and I'd hazard a guess it's more to do with the FA. They are there to pick the best performing players, spend a short amount of time with them and pick up a win. The England manager's job sounds great - watching football all the time, picking a squad and touring around the world - but they've got to get that squad together and implement their ideology in such a short time period, possibly to the detriment of what they have been doing at club level. Look at Henderson and Shaw on Wednesday; both players playing exciting, expansive and attacking football at their respective clubs and they were stifled under Hodgson.
You say we need an England manager to manage England players? I say we need the best manager to continue the development of our best players at international level.
I know there are England players from all over the country, but England is just a London club to me. I can't stand all that cockney bollocks. I'm a Liverpool supporter, why would I support England? Obviously I want our players to do well whenever they play for their country, but all I really care about is that they return unscathed.
That is just weird
"England is a London club?"
"I'm a Liverpool supporter, why would I support England?"
