PL proven, scores goals for a small club and will give us squad depth.

I'm having flashbacks to last summer. We need to learn from past mistakes, not repeat them FFS.

Another summer like last could be the killer.

I'm not suggesting he should be our marquee signing, but he could be alright. I'd say he is a more proven performer than the Downings of this world. I wasn't up for signing Downing, I reckon Dempsey could be alright...

Depends on the transfer fee but he could be a useful squad player for us.

I'd be worried that if we did bring him in it would be as a starter for the first team which would be a mistake IMO

4m!? For that much its a no-brainer. You can get at least 3 or 4 good years out of him. 6m wouldn't be a disaster either. 8m and your pushing it.

The last thing we need is another player that is 'alright'. We spent 80 million pounds last year on 4 British players that were 'alright' and they demonstrably made us worse.
From now on we should only sign players who are either proven quality or have the potential to become top class. And before you mention the myth that our lack of CL football prevents us from signing genuine quality I'll give you some names that have recently signed for clubs without CL football.

              Luis Suarez
              Falcao
              Papisse Cisse
              Raul Meireles
              Cabaye
              etc.

We should buy players to improve our team/squad. End of.
                  Dempsey would do that.

And I would Argue only Downing made us worse.

Dempsey EPL Stats - Last 5 years. (on ESPN website)

                    2011/12: Apps: 37 Goals: 17 Assists: 6
                    2010/11 Apps: 35 Goals: 12 Assists: 3
                    2009/10 Apps: 27 Goals: 7 Assists: 3
                    2008/09 Apps: 28 Goals: 7 Assists: 2
                    2007/08 Apps: 29 Goals: 6 Assists: 2

                    Total: Apps: 156 Goals: 49 Assists: 16

Pretty impressive figures, wouldn't you say?. If he is available for cheap he could be an inspired signing. Lets think more along the lines of a Craig Bellamy rather than a Stewart Downing

IF he was available for between £4-£6M he'd be a worthwhile addition to the squad.

Thats like saying we should only sign players that will work out as a success and score loads of goals and win loads of medals with us (we totally should do that BTW). But it impossible to say in advance who will be a good signing and who will be ****. Dempsey has scored a few goals, has experience would give the squad depth. Every other team has a squad with loads of options from the bench - so should we. Crouch was a much mocked signing for us but he worked out well. Morientes was one we all wanted and he was balls.

the speculation over dempsey might just be another load of bollox but he is a decent player, and would improve the squad. he would bring more to the team than dirk, so if we could get him and a 3-4m price then i think this is worthwhile.

if you add siggy [siggy scores the goals; sung to the tune of ziggy stardust], tello, diame signed by west ham ffs, aly cissokho [lb], luuk de jong to the squad then we will be challenging with more goals than we were last year.

removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

Perhaps that's because very few people had seen either of them play before they signed for Newcastle. I personally don't watch foreign leagues very often with the exception of La Liga.

Oh and on your hindsight point I knew from day one that Carroll, Downing, Henderson and Adam were atrocious signings and that we could easily have signed superior players last summer for reasonable fees and wages despite not having CL football.

Looking at Dempsey`s stats who wants to guess when Hogdson left Fulham?

It looks the man thrives when he is allowed to play football. On a cheap he will be good addition.
