Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. Beckham should count his blessings he's had the chance to be involved with the bid. Needs to grow a pair and move on. There are athletes out there who have missed out on the chance to perform at this Olympics for one reason or another, people who genuinely struggled through and Beckham gets sympathy?

Might as well get Seb Coe back into running and put him forward as an athlete.

Neil, seriously it is not just about the media hype around Beckham.

The guy really wanted this and he is still playing at a level that is keeping him quite competetive. And considering all his work for team GB he should have got a place in the squad. It leaves a horrible taste IMO and Pearce comes out of this with very little credit.

Now that Bale is out maybe Beckham will still get a chance ?

Grow a pair and move on? Dispute that being a horrible phrase, I havnt seen Beckham dwell on this at all.

He is getting a lot of coverage by the press, but that's it. It only seems to be people like us slagging him off, and saying he should move on.

I'm sure Multi-Millionaire David Beckham will be able to deal with this blow. Now, if only he could grow some testicles he would be able to deal with it better.

It's football and it's on tv during the summer. Gets my vote.

best reply but the hype has turned me off completely.

Pearce is not the high brow technical coach to produce any kind of cutting tactics, he's like a junior Bodgson.. Launch it and hope it sticks or we win the 2nd ball through mistakes...classy...

Argentina won the last Olympic Gold with Mascherano and Messi in the team...why shouldn't Team GB be taking this seriously?!!?

Because 'team gb' only exists for this competition. After that it's no more. An Olympic gold in football surely has less prestige than a 400metres gold. other sports work for 4 years to peak for their one event. Having football in cheapens it for me.

having professional sportsmen and women isn't an Olympic ideal either

Football has been a long standing event at the Olympics though, it isn't new.

We are only entering because it's London. I doubt we will see a team in 4 years time.

Probably not, but that is a lot to do with the SFA and WFA.

Hmm, are you sure? Like I said, I'm sure people are sincere but let's have a look at it:

So what? Good for him but lots of people "really want" lots of things.

Quite competitive perhaps but hardly at the level of someone playing in the Premiership.

Ok, so he put himself out to some extent - he was hardly working on it night and day for months but still, he needn't have done anything I suppose so I'll accept he did more for the bid than anyone who has made the football squad...

...but that doesn't follow at all. You want to apply different criteria to him than applies to anyone else in the whole Olympic squad, not just the football squad. That seems totally wrong to me.

Yes, he does, if you assume that (a) Beckham has a special right to a place in the squad and (b) that Pearce didn't pick him in order to make himself appear tough and not on sporting merit (according to one man's opinion).

I think the key point Neil is that I do not think Pearce dropped him for footballing reasons. Aside from that I think we should just agree to disagree on this one.
