Yeah, I mean Dempsey scored more goals last year in the Prem than all of our strikers put together (or something like that), whereas nobody (much) has seen this fella play for more than a couple of matches tops, in which he's not been great either. But **** it, he's got a cool name that ends in ez, lets have him instead.

Not that I'm a huge Dempsey fan, but if he was Brazilian I bet half this forum would be creaming themselves over him. £15m+ on Ramirez would be quite a risk, possibly a considerably bigger one than £10m on Dempsey.

Anyone is good enough as long as they are not English/British or play for another English/British team...

Given that Dempsey only started playing pro in 2004 you could argue that he's only just hitting his peak now... so potentially one could expect his current scoring rate to continue for a good few seasons. His career record isn't far off 1 in 3, he almost never gets injured, and we seriously lack goals coming out of midfield. This isn't really the thread, and as I said, I'm not a massive fan of him, but I could totally see the sense in signing him.

As for Ramirez, well if his name was Gary Ramsey and he played for Fulham/Aston Villa/Swansea everyone on here would be going ballistic at the potential fees being quoted. Not saying he's not got potential, but almost everyone's acting like he's a world beater basically just because of his nationality. While a couple of people who've seen him on here like Mostar rate him, there's comments from people like Tim Vickery (who does know his stuff usually) who are a lot less sure. Personally I've seen absolutely nothing that says he's not just this year's Quaresma or Joaquin. For £10m I'd say fine, your points about his age etc are perfectly valid. But getting towards double that or even more, I'm much MUCH more dubious.

Its all immaterial anyway, just like you I also don't believe we're in for him at all.

For me I'd be happy with the 3 signings of Allen, Ramirez and Borini. I think it follows the FSG policy and each of these appear to have bags of potential. If we are talking in the region of 35m for all 3, I wouldn't complain too much.

Of course we may not even be after either...could all be press speculation, you just never know.

Yep agree - the mooted fee for Gaston is too much. £10m and I'd want us all over it - at £18m ish then it's too much. I've only seen him play for a total of about 90 minutes.

To be fair there are some South American football commentators - English and Uruguayan - who rate him very highly. And Vickery told us Gonzalez would tear it up.

Ramirez is a very good young player.

I have seen him play more than few times last year in Serie A and I tend to think that in the right set-up with Luis and Borini and possibly one more good wide player he could be exactly what we need.

That said, you will not sign him for £10m. No one will.

Bologna wants big time money as they don't have 100% of his rights (Penarol owns apparently 30% of his selling rights), which they will have tough time getting it but imo he is worth £15-18m as I said yesterday and I'd sign him if we have that chance.


Speculations are MCFC is really interested and if that is the case he won't come to us.

Not point of comparison as they play in slightly different positions but imo he is better value for the money than either Hendo or Allen and they did or coud cost about the same as Ramirez.
