Starter for £10m: Liverpool eye Walcott as owners pledge to buy in January

Rebuilding Rodgers will be handed an eight-figure war-chest for the winter window and wants the Arsenal pay-rebel to boost his strikeforce

Brendan Rodgers wants Theo Walcott in January after being promised at least £10million to continue his rebuilding job at Liverpool.

The holders' embarrassing 3-1 home defeat by Swansea in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night has underlined the scale of the task facing Rodgers.

Winger Walcott scored a hat-trick in Arsenal's sensational Capital One Cup win over Reading on Tuesday and Rodgers can offer him the striker role he craves.

The Reds boss is monitoring Walcott's continued contract impasse with the Gunners, and will move for the England international in January if he does not commit to a future at the Emirates.

Walcott's Arsenal deal expires next June and Rodgers hopes to buy him for a knock-down price when the winter transfer window opens.

But Gunners boss Arsene Wenger claims he has not even considered selling Walcott in January as he believes the player will agree to stay.

However, Wenger admits Arsenal now urgently want the England star to sign a new deal.

Walcott's desire to play more down the middle - and his demand for £100,000-a-week - £25k more than Arsenal's offer - are the twin hurdles to be cleared before the player puts pen to paper.

Wenger said: "There is urgency in sorting out the new deal - how much I don't know. But there is urgency. We want to sort it out before Christmas, one way or the other.

"I wouldn't like to sell him in January if he doesn't sign a new deal. I've not even thought about that, because at the moment I think we will still manage to make a deal with him.

"In our team, we have freedom of movement," Wenger said. "Nobody is handcuffed - when we have the ball, we have a lot of freedom to move.

"It's important to know where we go, but I think Theo has learnt a lot on that.

"He loves to score goals, Theo. He has good pace, makes excellent, intelligent runs, and what has changed with Theo is he's now a very good finisher.

"I would like to take as an example his first goal the other night at Reading - a real 'finisher' goal."

Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group have told Rodgers they will fund a new striker in January after blocking his move for goal-scoring Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey on August's transfer deadline day.

They were not prepared to sanction the required outlay in transfer fee and wages because of Dempsey's age, but Walcott fits their definition of a young, talented, domestic player.

Rodgers will also attempt to move out expensive fringe players, such as Joe Cole, whose Anfield career looks over after his terrible showing against Swansea.

Cole costs Liverpool £120,000-a-week in wages and Rodgers would love to use that money to finance his own signings.

Stewart Downing and Jose Enrique are also not part of Rodgers' long-term plans, but he knows moving them and Cole on in January will be difficult because of their high salaries.

Downing and Cole played in the 3-1 defeat to Swansea and Joe Allen was gutted to lose to his old team.

"We're bitterly disappointed," said the Wales midfielder. "It almost took us to go two goals down before we really kicked into gear.

"It's easy to say after getting knocked out of the cup, but the league is every team's priority and it's no different for us.

"It's another big game at home at Anfield against Newcastle on Sunday and one that we'll be looking to bounce back in by taking all three points."

My guess is it`s more than £10M, we made the mistake of saying we have loads of money to burn before.
BR has already shown that he`ll walk away from a player if the price is to high, and with £10M as the sum we official can spend we might get better deals.

I'll be happy with just Walcott.

A front three of Suarez/Sterling/Walcott would be electric. I don't think there is any justification in spending a significant sum of money on a centre forward when that role is clearly Suarez'. In addition, the more I watch us play, the more I think that Walcott can in fact play as the front man in the system we have in place should the need arise.

I'm not a big fan of Walcott, from the times I have watched him he very rarely offers anything but speed to a side. I'm not convinced by his end product, and not least for the wage he will be demanding.

His goals and assists tally suggests that his end product is very good.

Is it that impressive? Havn't looked up his stats, but I have never seen him be particular high on assist or goals lists? He has his games here and there, but on average I havn't been that impressed with him.

We could do worse mind, but I just think we can do better than spunk 100k after him each week, it's massive wages for an average winger.
