Arsenal's Theo Walcott says new deal dependent on striking role

Theo Walcott says his future at Arsenal is partly dependent on whether he is selected as a striker in the future

The 23-year-old, who plays predominantly on the wing, is in the final year of his contract and rejected a new five-year deal worth £75,000 a week in August .

"I've been judged, with people saying it's all about money. It's never been that with me," Walcott told BBC Sport.

"Playing up front is important. It's one of the main factors for me."

The England international, who signed for £12.5 from Southampton in 2006, has made four appearances in the league this season, but three as a substitute - scoring one goal.

He added: "I signed as a striker. I've learnt my trade out on the wing.

"Hopefully, I'll get to play up front in the next few games. It's frustrating being on the bench, but it's one of those things I have to deal with."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger recently stated that it will be "difficult" to extend Walcott's contract if the player has not agreed a new deal by April.

Walcott, who was promoting the Football Association's Just Play scheme on Monday, added: "It's been a slow process.

"It's not going to happen any time soon. My last contract took six months to do. It's one of those things that is frustrating for me. Hopefully it can be sorted."

Walcott's wish to be recognised as a striker is a tough one following the signings of forwards Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud this summer.

Giroud has yet to score since his £12m move from Montpellier, but he netted 21 goals to help the French side to the Ligue 1 title last season.

Podolski has already scored three times for the Gunners in the current campaign, as has Ivory Coast forward Gervinho. Arsenal's fourth striker Marouane Chamakh has yet to make an appearance this season.

saw a thing on the beeb saying walcott wanted to be the striker if he was going to stay at arsenal.
if he came here will he get game time in front of goal, or will he get stuck out wide.

and how much are we going to pay him... is it right he is looking for 100k
removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

No way he's prolific enough to be a striker.
              Are we winning?

he's not going to be the striker there with podolski and giroud is he. not guaranteed anyway. wenger won't be dictated to like that.

Well that certainly increases the likelihood of him coming here.

Don't fancy him as a centre forward at all and I can't see him ever being given that role by a top club.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I don't think so either, but Rodgers will sell him his front 3 line up.

Don't think he'll stay at Arsenal, City will not go for him now and neither will United or Chelsea. That doesn't leave many options.

He's too dumb to be relied upon for goals. Still very much just running around like an excited jack russell and hoping something happens.

That said, I still reckon we'll try our best to sign him.

I think he'll be a good addition to our forward line though.

So do I, but I don't think he'd work as the central of the three in our system. Happily have him on the right though.

                                Sterling Suarez Walcott

That's a lot of width but we'd still need a deadly centre forward over Suarez, and then where would that leave Sterling?
