If his problem is that the players are being abusive to the refs, why don't they start booking them? Abusive language is mentioned in the rules.

If the refs applied the letter of the law and started booking, and even sending off, for abusive language then the situation would soon improve.

I'm totally against racism in every way shape and form, but if these are proven true why should Clattenburg never ref again? Especially if it is proven 'true' without good evidence.

It shouldn't be one case for the players different for everyone else, a fine (obviously smaller, and a 4-8 game ban)

Fwiw I don't think he'd be stupid enough to say it, i just cant see it.

'cheeky monkey' is fine and acceptable. So is 'Spanish ****'.

We don't know if he said Cheeky monkey?

But if he did it wouldn't have been racial not a chance.

But like the Suarez case, where the phrase used is commonplace amongst the speakers of the lingo and has no racist implications, it makes no odds in this case then either? Like Suarez, Clattenburg could have used a phrase that he himself didn't imagine to be insulting, but others would (Mikel being called a monkey for example, albeit a cheeky one?).

i must call my kid a cheeky monkey 10 times a day... two sides of the story...

many years ago one of the neighbours was sat in our house with me and the mrs and her young son [who is mixed race] was climbing on our fence. i knocked on the window and shouted get down you little monkey, and we just carried on talking. then this crazy bitch [who just happened to be black] who also lived over the road come storming across the road and hammered on my window shouting all sorts of abuse, saying i was a racist cunt, etc...
even when i pointed out that the lads mother was sat with me and she realised the context, as the lad was climbing on the fence, and all mischievous kids can be referred to as little monkeys, this other woman just wouldnt shut up about it.

in my line of work i often see people who are quick to play the race card, which i find so disgusting, i call them an embarrassment to other black people who might actually be abused but dont say anything for fear of being accused of having a whinge for no reason.

i know that refs need to be squeaky clean. they need to be miked up and recorded, for their own protection in case their are false accusations.

Cheeky Monkey would have been a dreadful choice of words, and I just cannot see how he would have said it. Maybe if it was a 1950s Carry On Film, but a PL match between Chelsea and Man Utd, not a chance. If he said it, it was racist.

or maybe he was a little naive and in the moment didnt realise the fuse he was lighting

I agree that if that is what he said, it probably wasn't said as a racial slur. The problem is that with Suarez case the FA took references to context or culture out of the equation. If you do the same thing here, he has seemingly called a black player a monkey which is totally unacceptable.

The way out of this for the FA would seemingly be to say that it wasn't an abusive or confrontational situation, (which no doubt the player would disagree with) in a similar way to which they determined that what Suarez said was said in an aggressive/non-friendly way. However whatever happens it will put the FA in an awkward position and will reflect badly on them.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

**** - is cheeky monkey a racialist term?

It is all conjecture right now, but I just cannot fathom how he would choose words like 'Cheeky Monkey' to someone like Mikel. He is not English and may not understand that kind of 'humour'. Maybe to a British player yes, but a black African origin foreign player, well that is asking to be misunderstood.

We've been here before when it was leaked that Suarez said 'Negrito' when he didn't.The inference being that it was leaked because 'Negrito' is easier to explain away then 'Negro'.

We should wait and see what,if anything, he actually said before we come to conclusions
