Thanjk you.

It would be an expensive gamble and we have had quite a few of them go tits up recently.
I can see why the board would not want to sanction this sort of deal.
Eeeeexactly.
It's not about buying big name players, it's about signing the right player - how do Gerrard and Sneijder fit in the same team? I'm not sure they can as they both like to see a lot of the ball.
If we had the CL money, we probably could afford it... but even then, I'm not convinced we need him over more width and a left back right now.

By having more of the ball?

It wouldn't just be a huge wage for Sneijder, it'd lead to other players demand wage increases too. It is not a good situation to get into.
He'd come in as practically the top earner, maybe second only to Gerrard... how does that look to the other important players - Agger, Skrtel, Lucas, Reina, etc...
As Chazza said - it's a long-term financial risk that we simply can't afford to make again. We pissed enough money up the wall on Cole, Carroll and Downing - we need to stop being so frivellous.
Meeeh, don't think that's a good deal for Atletico - they too have been trying to sort their finances out and are in a considerable amount of debt. Taking Sneijder on wouldn't help them whatsoever.
