Paris Saint-Germain ready to bid £50m for Napoli's Edinson Cavani
    • French champions determined to secure Uruguay striker
    • Offer designed to keep Real Madrid out of the picture

Paris Saint-Germain are to challenge Real Madrid by bidding £50m for the Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.

The French champions lost their manager, Carlo Ancelotti, to Madrid last month and endured a frustrating pursuit of a successor before turning to Laurent Blanc, effectively their fifth or sixth choice for the role.

The episode served to undermine PSG's desire to be considered as one of Europe's powerhouses. The club, flushed with the funds supplied by their Qatari owners, are intent on restating their credentials by making waves in the transfer market.

Cavani, the Uruguay striker who scored 29 goals last season, has generated interest from Spain and the Premier League but Napoli have insisted they will brush off any bid that does not activate the €63m (£53m) release clause in the 26-year-old's contract.

That fee had dissuaded Manchester City from entering the running. Chelsea, so keen to add to their forward ranks, had lodged an inquiry in the hope they would be offered encouragement that such a valuation might be lowered but, with the Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis insistent the get-out must be triggered, they have taken a step back to consider their next move.

That had left Madrid, with Ancelotti installed and the president Florentino Perez keen to offer a statement of grand intent, apparently in pole position to secure the Uruguayan following his involvement in the Confederations Cup in Brazil.

De Laurentiis indicated on Tuesday night that no formal offer had been received but reports in France suggest Cavani's agent, Pierpaolo Triulzi, was in Paris on Monday and met with PSG's technical director, Leonardo.

Leonardo had reportedly made contact with De Laurentiis last month to prepare the ground, with relations between the clubs apparently strong following Ezequiel Lavezzi's move from Naples to Parc des Princes a year ago.

The player, who is contracted until 2017, departed on holiday following Uruguay's defeat to Italy in the third-place play-off at the Confederations Cup on Sunday but anticipates meeting the Napoli president on his return "to look at my future with my representatives".

De Laurentiis has indicated there is no need to hold any such meeting given no club has tabled a sufficient bid for the striker's services.

Real might step up the Suarez interest then.

Ronaldo misses United, happy at Real

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted he is “really happy” in Spain as speculation about a possible return to Manchester United continues.

Ronaldo, 28, has yet to sign a new contract with Los Blancos - with his current deal expiring in two years - and former club United are reportedly lining up a big-money summer bid for him.

But while the Portugal star, who has scored a remarkable 201 goals in 199 games for Madrid since arriving from Old Trafford as the world’s most expensive player in 2009, once again spoke fondly of his time in Manchester, he stressed that he is content with life at the Bernabeu.

"I really miss English football. For me, it was some of the best years in my career when I was there in Manchester United,” Ronaldo said as he paid a visit to a school in Singapore. “Everyone knows that. It is the club that is still in my heart and I really, really miss [United].

"But now my life is in Spain, I'm enjoying playing there too. Part of my life is there but the future, we never know but I'm really, really happy in the Spanish league at the moment."

Ronaldo was also asked about the threat of Barcelona next season following their acquisition of Neymar, to which he replied: "I'm only thinking about my team. I don't care about Barcelona. They've signed a great player but I am focused on my team, which I think is the best in the world.”

Leandro Damiao's agent claims that he is in talks with an unnamed club about a move, with reports in Brazil claiming that the team in question is Southampton.

Internacional have been insistent that they have not fielded any offers for the 23-year-old, but his agent Jorge Machado has claimed talks are ongoing with an unnamed club.

Tottenham have been long-term admirers of the striker and have made more than one offer in the past 18 months, but now reports suggest it is another Premier League club in the shape of Southampton that is pushing strongest for him.

"There is a club interested [in Leandro]," Machado told UOL.

"We have been talking with Internacional for many days, but we have to wait.

"Inter have set a value, which is very significant, so we need to have more talks."

Internacional's director of football Luis Cesar de Souto Moura reiterated the club's position.

"There is no offer for Leandro Damiao," he told Radio Guaiba.

"We understand the following as an offer: when an agent or club make an official enquiry and expresses interest in the player."

He also added that the club would want over £20million for the player.

"An offer for Leandro Damiao will only be considered if it's around €25 million," emphasised Moura.link

New Paris Saint Germain coach Laurent Blanc has confirmed his interest in Newcastle United star Yohan Cabaye.

Cabaye's future remains far from certain at St James' Park, and he has been linked with a number of clubs in the Premier League and also back in his native France.

Big spending Monaco and PSG are both thought to be keeping close tabs on Cabaye's situation, and Blanc is a big fan of Cabaye.

Blanc was the French manager when he gave Cabaye his debut for his country, and he has remained a big fan of the 27-year-old midfielder.

"Yohan offers many things in midfield and can play in quite a few positions," said Blanc.

"He is an interesting player, and the midfield will be an area we will be strengthening because there will be departures."

Blanc is also in need of a new left-back and he confirmed he was looking at highly-rated Lille youngster Lucas Digne and former Barcelona ace Eric Abidal.

"Lucas Digne and Eric Abidal are of interest to PSG, if one of the players mentioned happens, it would be a good thing," he said.

Blanc also insisted that he has no plans to sell centre-half Mamadou Sakho - who was frustrated last season under Carlo Ancelotti.

"For me, there is no problem. It is with great pleasure that I work with him," he concluded.

I'm not sure it is. He only scored one goal in his time at Shanghai (in 25 matches) and then managed a paltry 3 appearances for Juve scoring no goals.

I think he's looking for his last decent paycheck personally.

If they get a season out of him, which I guess is what they are looking for, then he can do a decent job.

With Lukaku gone back and Odemwinge on his way out they could do with some experience in attack.
