I think Kone is a good player for the level they were at.

Fairly limited, but runs like absolute hell, challenges for everything which you need in a team playing against a far superior team, and he was a fairly decent dribbler. Doesn't have the finesse for a top half team but definitely well suited to lower PL.

Being relegated doesn't make Martinez necessarily a failure. Corporate America put a lot of stock in entrepreneurs that have failed in the past.
