Liverpool's signing of Armenian hitman Henrik Mkhitaryan is close to being confirmed after the player reportedly completed a medical at Anfield today.

SportsDirect News has learned Shakhtar Donetsk forward Mkhitaryan skipped out on his side's summer training camp in Austria in order to fly in to Liverpool and complete a medical ahead of signing terms with the Anfield club.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring some attacking flair to his Anfield side and had been linked with a £23 million bid.

The Armenian international, 24, is one of European football's hottest properties, having netted 29 times for Shakhtar Donetsk last season as the Ukrainian side bagged a league and cup double.

Mkhitaryan ended the Ukrainian Premier League as top-scorer with 25 goals, one short of breaking the record set by Vitaliy Starukhin in the Soviet Top League season of 1978-79, who also played for Shakhtar.

A Liverpool spokesman declined to confirm the transfer.

Sounds a bit soft for the Premier League if you ask me.

His club a trying to get a bidding war happening. I said a few days ago on ST that I don't think we'll sign him because his club will want too much money. There will be no Eriksen to fall back on either so I guess us buying him depends on whether we really feel Mkhitarayan is a priority signing.
