There are two types of systems in the modern game. One has three central midfielders ("4-3-3"). The other has two ("4-4-2"). All the different formations are just variations of these two basic systems. A 4-4-1-1 is in essence 4-4-2 with one of the forward playing a bit deeper and being more involved in playmaking for example.

The team definitely lined up in a 442 variation yesterday, maybe with Aspas sitting off Sturridge as a 4411. (as per Wiw's post)
It didn't end up that way - it changed around throughout the game - but 442 was how it started, it was plain as the nose on your face
