So they are doing a City. Paying massive wages to get the players to sign for them.

They will now get it easier to sign other top class players because Özil showed that he believes in their project and that the wages won't be a problem.

They will of course now be forced to pay other top class players around the same wages if not even more. The problem City had and still have.

                  No way back now.

Actually, there are legal complications there and I was surprised nothing was made of this earlier.

Clubs agreed in principle that if another club pays the buy-out clause they will sell at that total price, meaning that the player does not actually pay the money: it effectively becomes a transfer like any other. But when it is a hostile bid, two other scenarios open up: one, that the club accepts the buy-out fee but, as all Spanish companies do, adds VAT (at 21%). And two, when the club does not accept the fee at all, the player deposits the money at the league himself. Of course, in practice Herrera does not have €36m lying around, so United could in theory pay the money on his behalf. Yet that could be challenge by both the tax authorities and the league itself as the player would strictly be liable for 50% income tax.
If Bilbao want to make this difficult they definitely can.

The difference being City were paying top class money for 2nd rate players, or worse! Ozil is class and Wenger to his credit has pulled off a great deal for a player better than anyone Spurs have brought in.

Wonder if they're still going after Di Maria? Basically funding Madrid's move for Bale.

Barcelona reject Arsenal approach for Mascherano

From Sportsmail's Dominic King: 'Arsenal are close to signing Mesut Ozil but it is understood they failed in an enquiry over the availability of Barcelona's Javier Mascherano.

'The discussions never got beyond Arsenal asking whether Barcelona would be willing to enter into negotiations, as the answer was a categorical 'no'.'
