If Basel (or any football club for that matter) get an offer of £12m for a player and whilst trying to negotiate, an offer comes in for £16m, you're going to accept the larger offer and use that as part of the negotiations. If Chelsea blow us out of the water - more fool them and unlucky Salah.
Read the snippet from some random on rawk. Also read a few snippets saying our bid is higher. Either way, if a player wants to go to a certain club then he can force a move there as opposed to a different one. Either they get the alleged 12 m or they get nothing because he doesnt move to Chelsea. It happens. Think we were outbid for Coutinho by Soton last Jan too. He ended up here

Fact is some players have no ambition and just want to pick up a wage. He only has to look at the history of chelsea and what they do with young players

The thing is the window opened on 1st January. We aren't reliant on selling anyone. So why didn't we get a deal together straight away. Then its too late for other clubs to come in.

The longer you leave it to sign a player the less impact they'll have on the season as obviously there are less games left to play. I realise it isn't just about this season but we really do have a massive chance of getting 4th.

Not for the first time we've haggled on price long enough for someone else to come in and take the player. We really should be learning this by now.

Perhaps it's not us dragging out the negotiations, but more so the selling club dragging it out and getting it in to the public domain to get the highest price for one of their assets?

A bit peeved off tbh. I also think our hesitation could sometimes be seen by the player like we don't really want him bad enough, like we are just window shopping and might pick something up if it's cheap.
                * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Hard to know, but sure if we lose out whatever the reason it's a blow as he has huge potential.

This is also possible but how difficult is it to establish how much someone wants for someone and then decide if you want to pay it?

Us:Hello how much do you want for Salah?
                      Them:£12m
Us:Ok we only want to pay £8m,would you take that?
                      Them:No
                      Us:Ok bye.

And move on to next target.

Recent reports stated we only made an official bid this week. Why the wait.

Id be more annoyed if it was a player we actually needed

Looks like the chavs will make it 24 on loan (without Salah) Essien could be loaned to AC Milan

De Jong? he'll be suspended more often than he plays.
