Liverpool set to make £12m bid for Basle's 'Egyptian Messi' Salah as Rodgers moves early to beat off competition for winger

Liverpool are poised to make a £12million bid for Mohamed Salah after manager Brendan Rodgers made a personal check on the Basle winger.
Liverpool have been trailing the Egyptian for over six months and Rodgers flew to Germany on Wednesday to watch the the 21-year-old in action for himself against Schalke in the Champions League.
Basle are now ready to sell their prized asset and want around £15m for a player who has been dubbed 'the Egyptian Messi' following his goals return of 17 in 26 internationals.
Tottenham have also monitored Salah's progress, notably watching him score against Chelsea in the Champions League home and away.
He also scored against Chelsea in the Europa League semi-finals last season, and against Spurs in the last eight.
Other European sides are also keen with Galatasaray and Monaco among them.
However, Liverpool is an appealing option for Salah and, if Rodgers gives the go-ahead for an official bid, they are likely to get their man.

Salah was apparently asked what he thought about Liverpool's attacking options. "Aspas. Very dangerous!" he said. He's still figuring out how to get those camels to his brother-in-law as compensation for wrecking his car.
I'm basing this purely on what other say about them because I've admittedly seen very little - but if we do sign Salah and Fernando Reges, plus a good LB in the window, then I'm going to be pretty darn excited.
Edit: I won't however get excited just yet; certainly not on the basis of Twitter as we saw what can happen there with the likes of Mk.. and Costa in the summer.
Can understand some peoples reservations about Salah.. he young & is pure raw talent and that can go either way. I like him though lighting quick, low centre of gravity and quite strong. Very unpredictable but extremely positive.. always looking to attack and push forward.
to be fair salah has looked good when he has played against good opposition though.
Whilst I think your point is valid, to play against teams of a higher quality on a weekly basis is a step up when you come from a club like basel where you are only occasionally asked to play the chelseas and the man uniteds.

We don't strong teams every week either. There are games against teams like Fulham, Palace and Spurs

They have maybe 6 games every year in the CL ( usually they don't progress from their group) i would say at least the top 8 teams in the premier league would give them a run for their money if you hypothetically put them in the swiss league. Thats at least 16 'big' league games + cup games/ CL (assuming we get it)
I'm not writing Salah off just pointing out that playing at the top level well does not mean anything unless its with consistency. For example there will be players in the World cup who have a purple patch and shine for 4 or 5 games at the top level (e.g diouf) but are actually very average.
I will be excited if we sign him in January but a bit cautious at the same time as there seems to have been a ryan babel for every coutinho.

Problem is that until he's in a top league we can't answer that question. But unlike the top clubs, we can't wait to see how they'll do in a top league, as if we wait the price will reach levels we can't really afford to pay. I haven't seen him play really, but if he performs well in the Swiss league on a Regular basis and is able to stand out in the CL, then that's the sort of player we should be looking at signing.
What we don't want is players who can't step up to the highest level, OR players who can't get themselves up for lesser games. But those types of players aren't as easy to find as we would expect.

good points.
he does stand out in that team, and although he is only occasionally playing against top class opposition he does cover himself in gravy.
the results of his team [failure to qualify from group] and in international games cant just be down to him, though.
we only have the benefit of the odd games on tv or youtube compilations, and almost anyone can look like they are having a worldie with clever editing. if he has been scouted properly then they will watch his movement off the ball, is he doing the graft and the dirty stuff.
