Being that the bet had nothing to do with sport, is the suggestion that he has to do everything in secret in case someone puts a bet on something he does? Seems that gives betting companies a lot of power over peoples lives.

Its obscene a player can be banned for discussing their career with a family member in case that family member uses it or accidentally discusses it with a friend who in turn uses it. FAr more sense to actually limit bookies to offer those sorts of market at all.
