Fifa president Gianni Infantino says biennial World Cup can help save African lives

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has suggested reforms to football's calendar could help prevent Africans from risking their lives to migrate.

World football's governing body has put forward plans which include staging a World Cup every two years.

Infantino says more regular World Cups can help provide hope for some nations.

"We need to give opportunities and we need to give dignity, not by giving charity, but by allowing the rest of the world to participate," he said.

Infantino added: "We need to give hope to Africans so they don't need to cross the Mediterranean in order to find, maybe, a better life, but more probably death in the sea."

More than 23,000 people are missing as a result of attempts to cross the Mediterranean according to data gathered by the Missing Migrants Project.

Uefa, Europe's major leagues and South American football's governing body Conmebol have opposed plans for a biennial World Cup, while Caf, the African governing body, has given its backing.

Fifa delegates have been told switching the staging of football's biggest international tournament would generate £3.3bn in additional revenue over a four-year cycle.

I dunno. If I was from a war torn nation, my family decimated, no income or future then I'd definitely stick it out I'd there was a bit more footy on telly

Nations will just boycott it. There's no room in the calendar for it. Top tier players get a decent break every other year, the other years they get a few weeks.

First World problems I know but they're still people with families.

I dunno, national FAs also make lots of their money from qualification and tournaments, just like UEFA and FIFA, we’ll see I guess.

Surely it puts the squeeze on the continental tournaments? WC qualifiers take about 2 years and Euro championship qualifiers take about 2 years at present. If there is a WC every 2 years either the continental tournaments get pushed out and don't happen which will make the associations such as UEFA unhappy (as they lose their cash cow) or the whole qualification process needs to be shortened, either meaning more games in a short space of time or a massive overhaul of how teams qualify.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

How can you possibly have a WC and EC in the same year

The Euro's disappear, but UEFA get a cut from the WC takings?

Or the Euros are every 4 years still, but in odd years, whilst the WC is every 2 yrs in even years?

Assuming the WC is in every even year, the Euros finals would have to move to an odd year. But given that in Europe at least the cycle after one WC finals is the start of qualifiers for the Euros 2 years later which run for the best part of 2 years, then the tournament, then when the euros finals finish the next WC qualifiers start and run for the best part of 2 years before the next WC finals.

If the qualifying process takes 2 years, and there is a WC every 2 years then as soon as the finals are over the next qualifiers start and run most of the way to the WC in 2 years. Even if there is a gap in the summer for the Euros finals where do the qualifiers fit in?

No home and away in the Qualifier groups? New qualifying tournament to start every autumn and finish by January?
