The fact people are blindly ignorant and homophobic is exactly why this is a positive move. You identify the problem and surely moves like this are part of the solution. The majority of people do not want to address the issue, or to discuss it. Hitzelsperger has helped create a forum and through discussion acceptance, or maybe understanding will be found and other barriers can begin to bebroken.

I agree with most of what you say, but there is a difference between those who post online about football and a lot of those who go to the game. For this to become unremarkable will take there being a first. The first man to come ou will be a role model and something of a revolutionary because he will be the first, then more will follow, then it will become the norm. This is irrespective of the industry. I'd imagine this is as true in society as it is in sport, and the fact we are having this discussion shows things are moving on and that this is a step in the right direction.
