Fifa has been urged to conduct an investigation into allegations Qatar offered football's world governing body $400m (£307m) three weeks before the Gulf state was awarded the 2022 World Cup.

The Sunday Times claims executives from Qatari broadcaster Al Jazeera signed a television contract prior to the bid.

The newspaper claims to have seen leaked documents that show the alleged deal included a fee of $100m (£77m) that would be paid into a designated Fifa account if Qatar was successful.

The Sunday Times also alleges Fifa was offered another payment of $480m (£368m) three years later.

Damian Collins, chairman of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee, called on Fifa to freeze any payments and added that the allegations would be a "clear breach" of its bidding rules if true.

In a statement, Fifa said it "is and will continue to co-operate with the authorities".

In December 2010, Qatar beat rival bids from the United States, Australia, South Korea and Japan to host the tournament.

The governing body added that former Fifa ethics investigator Michael Garcia's 2014 report into the bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups was published in full on its website in June 2017.

"Furthermore, please note that Fifa lodged a criminal complaint with the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland, which is still pending," said its statement.

Al Jazeera, which is now known as Bein Sports, was owned and controlled by Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who was the driving force behind the World Cup bid.

But seeding is different (I actually am not a fan) but at least you know what is going on, it’s transparent from before the draw is made. It motivates players to improve their seeding throughout the rest of the year.

This was not that. Or the implication is that there was a bit more to it.

I’ll be intrigued to know what this trickery was, because it’s not something that was transparent at the time, therefor it leaves the question, how did they do it, and has it happened at other times.

I would say yes.

The seeding is based on performance and ranking points. Fiddling a draw so two arbitrarily selected teams can't meet is a bit different

"A little trickery" was employed for the 1998 World Cup draw to ensure France and Brazil did not meet until the final, disgraced former Uefa president Michel Platini has claimed.

The French hosted and won their first World Cup 20 years ago, beating Brazil 3-0 in the final in Paris.

Former France captain Platini was on the tournament's organising committee.

"When we organised the schedule, we did a little trickery," he told radio station France Bleu Sport.

"France-Brazil in the final, it was the dream of everyone.

"If we finished first in the group and Brazil finished first, we could not meet before the final."

He laughed as he went on: "We did not spend six years organising the World Cup to not do some little shenanigans. Do you think other World Cup hosts did not?"

This ‘little bit of trickery’ is fixing the draw.

I knew that the hosts could setup the venues etc so for example England could play at Wembley if they won their group (if they failed to win the group that plan falls apart). I didn't realise that the hosts had a say in who could meet who when, that seems more dodgy than arranging the venues, surely the draw and potential route to the final should be done independently

Monetary penalties may be the only way to get Fifa to change.

I'm fairly sure I have read that FIFA has charitable status in Switzerland and is pretty much fully protected to do whatever they want as a result
