How can an industry which makes billions upon billions globally every month put itself in a position where crucial outcomes are decided by people who are not always capable of making the correct decision, without any tools to assist them, under a pressure so immense that it's almost impossible for you and I to comprehend.

I think incidents like this is why football is as big as it is. It creates headlines and gets people's attention. Not a week goes by without decisions being discussed everywhere football is played. And that is one of the things that makes it entertaining. Even though it might have been the wrong call, as long as it wasn't done because so bribery it is one of those things that makes football great.

That was a really scandalous decision, one of those like Suarez' disallowed winner at Goodison that time where you simply cannot understand how the official could be certain enough to make that call, viewed from any angle, perspective or speed.

Not to mention that was never a foul on Cesar just afterwards.

The context makes it seem actively corrupt, I'd be more inclined to blame human fallibility under pressure, however either way it was not a good way for the tournament to start.

And how ridiculous was it having a goal line technology replay for the goal? It hit the back of the net FFS.

While I do think that there are a lot of things that could be done to help out the refs, I don't think turning it into NFL would benefit the sport. It is one of the things I love with the game, a **** team might win due to pure luck, one call from the ref changes everything etc. It might not be fair, but it creates excitement and discussions.

But I guess we won't agree on this one.

But football doesn't need such artificial excitement. I think some people are more fans of discussion and reading media reports/controversy than of the actual game itself. They'd probably get the same kicks from following politics if they tried.

That was gas. There was actually a foul on a Croatia player in the buildup and the ref played on allowing the ball to be crossed in, which didn't immediately look like an advantage given it seemed high and wide.
Olic's challenge didn't even seem to be immediately blown for, it appeared to be only after the follow up chance was blocked and the ball then fell to a Croatian ready to be stuck away that the whistle seemed to appear.
Probably misremembering it a bit but that's how it seemed watching it last night.

Funny thing is, I remember that ref standing out as being pretty good in the last tournament (almost certain it was him in 2010), but I think he was more than swayed by what was around him and what was at stake. Even let a number of fouls against Brazil go last night after the important instances as if to give the impression of impartiality.

When it comes to artificial excitement I don't see as that. It is part of the excitement that is a football match for me. I don't tend to discuss a match much after it is over, So I don't read many reports or watch post-match shows. But I think your right that the pre/post match hype of a game seems to be the most important thing for some. Maybe even more at a WC since at lot of people don't really follow a team, so the build up becomes more interesting than the game itself.
