Liverpool expect to complete the signing of Loic Remy in the next few days after agreeing an £8m deal with QPR for the French striker.
Brendan Rodgers hopes the 27-year-old will join his squad during their tour of the USA this week as he continues the process of replacing Luis Suarez.
Liverpool have taken advantage of a release clause in Remy’s contract, although there will be a significant outlay on the striker’s wages which are believed to be around £90,000 a week.
Personal terms and a medical are still to be concluded, but Anfield officials regard this a formality as Remy prepares to become the fifth signing of the summer.
Remy will now challenge Daniel Sturridge for the number one striking role on Merseyside, Liverpool eager for the player not to be seen as a like for like replacement for Suarez.
Rodgers is likely to adapt his system this season, no longer tied to the option of playing two strikers as he felt compelled to in order to accommodate the Suarez and Sturridge partnership.
Liverpool have spent nearly £70 million on their squad already this summer, but there is a promise of much more.
Rodgers has already vowed to pass the £100 million mark with his purchases, re-investing the Suarez cash.
He is also benefiting from other significant sales.
Fabio Borini is on the verge of a move to Sunderland for £14 million, despite featuring in the club’s pre-season fixture at Preston this afternoon.
"They’ve offered to buy Fabio," confirmed Rodgers on Saturday.
"He obviously spent a successful period at Sunderland last year and it’s a fantastic club. There an agreement between the clubs but nothing agreed with the player.”
Liverpool have also agreed to send defender Andre Wisdom - who also featured in the friendly with Preston - on loan to West Bromwich Albion.
Rodgers has already signed Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Rickie Lambert and Emre Can.
Can and Lambert made their Liverpool debut at Deepdale on Saturday.
