A couple of semi-decent performances, a tap in and a penalty do not a consistent top level performer make, and definitely do not excuse the **** we watched earlier in the year. Good to see him do something... anything... in a red shirt to justify the millions we've already paid him, but the way it has been greeted worries me when I just know what will happen next. I do believe every word of this

I don't think I've ever seen a player so many people seem determined to convince themselves is actually good. But I am also fishing

I think it's easy to write a player off after half a season. For a player we had high expectations of to turn it around there has to be a chain of events that occur. First we have to lose virtually all hope that they'll turn it around and effectively give up on them. The next step is they come in, show more effort than previous and do the odd good thing, scoring the odd winning goal goes a long way. This reinvigorates the masses, gives confidence to player, he gets more game time and before you know it, firing on all cylinders.

I think Mario is on the right track. Whether he will ever reach that final destination is a moot point. But he's more valuable to us now that he was and I'll take that for now.

If a player is contributing to positive performances and results then that player deserves a shout out. If that player continues to do so, then he will continue to get plaudits.


It does not mean any past criticism was unwarranted and it does not mean that the player would not get flak for sub par performances in the future. But last night Balotelli put in a performance that warranted kudos, and me not rating him is not going to get in the way of me thinking he had a good game.
