If we get Depay in suddenly we look really strong with our forward players.

Who do we go after for the other striker tho.

Tevez for a year or two until others gain the experience or just spend 30 million on Lacazette as even though I rate most of our players I don't see the finishing we need to win the tight games.

There is no way that we would bring the deal to the point of completion - where we just need to press the button on the thing - only to say "actually we will come back to you". It is absurd to even suggest that.

I think it's naive to think that the club aren't negotiating multiple deals at the same time and will pull out of deals depending on where their priorities lie. They won't say 'it's on hold', they'll just delay a counter-offer or move negotiations on to a different topic, etc.

        - - - - - -Sturridge
        Depay - - Coutinho - - Markovic

        - - - - - - Origi
        Sterling - - Lallana - - Ibe

With a new striker as well and Origi can play in the wide postitions as well, I think this is what we should aim for.
        those line ups look decent.
the main issue is will sterling be here to be a part of it or will he be funding it
also, as much as i have loved the guy since seeing him flourish on loan at bolton, maybe we will never again get a full year out of sturridge and maybe its time to cash in when we can
removing all the weak links makes us stronger

too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

I would not mind us getting Depay in and cashing in on Sterling.
          * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

I think it's naive to think that if we take our prescious time to tie things up with Depay we increase the chance of losing out or alienating him. What is the reason for putting a deal on hold? That's what Barrett said btw. Are we pulling out of the deal if we get a striker in? Depay or his agent could feel that they are being used as a plan B if someone doesn't work out for us.

I have no idea. I'm just clutching at straws as much as the next poster. I'd hazard a guess that we want Depay and a striker but if we get bent over on the fee and or wages and it comes down to a straight choice between the two, they'll go for the striker.

Perhaps they'll try and sell somebody to fund Depay (e.g. Sterling) but I think we'd like both Depay and a striker. And I don't think it will be as simple as being between Depay and a striker; It could well be Depay, a striker, a central midfielder and a full-back. Rodgers will be working to a strict transfer budget all whilst juggling a selection of players for each position he wants to address.

I don't think Depay or his agent will be too bothered to read about rumours in the press, especially as they will be talking to numerous clubs too and are aware how these things happen.

Barrett is usually reliable and if he says the talks are on hold I'll believe him. Maybe it's mutual which is fine but I still feel that if we have chance to sign a player like Depay then sign him and tie it up as soon as possible, don't put it on hold FFS.

                  Ayre strikes again!

In response to "So @JamesPearceEcho saying we've made an offer for Depay while @TonyBarretTimes saying deal is on hold till we sign a striker."

If this is true, it's really odd imo, important targets/signings should not be reliant on attempts to sign other players. imo.

Unless he's said he doesn't want to come, and it's designed to conceal that and save face, in which case i'd rather they just came out with the truth.

So you have £40m in transfer funds plus £20m generated in sales. You want Depay, Benzema and Pjanic.

PSV say for £20m you can begin talks with Depay which we do. Real Madrid say they want £35m for Benzema who we see as a priority next year in terms of goals, but it only leaves £5m for a midfielder. We begin trying to negotiate on price with Madrid and believe we need a midfielder to replace Gerrard. If we have to pay £35m for Benzema, £25m could secure Pjanic but it means missing out on Depay. We then try and trim the excess from the squad by looking for buyers to generate some more money to try and get Depay.

It's a washed down example, but it's to highlight the complexity of a summer transfer window where funds are tight and how certain things will need prioritising.

It's hypothetical, change it to whoever you want.

I stopped reading at 'prioritising', you should try harder.

Chances of Depay ending up at another club, 100%. Chances of us signing any player listed in this entire thread, 0%.

IMO this sort of negotiation only end up in us failing to sign all of the above.
