His game is a deep lying mid in the style of alonso but he's also been very good defensively when I've seen him.

He has been a bit of a yellow card magnet but one has to take into account just how card happy refs in Spain can be (its like they have to hit a quota some games)

Edit all that - since he joined Real he has only bagged 3 a season which is fine. Mind you that could be down to the team rather than him.

He's not very quick and can be cumbersome in the tackle, from what i've seen though he is decent on the ball though. When he was at Soceidad he was being compared to Alonso but his stock really has dropped since making the move to Madrid. Like so many players that move to likes of Madrid & Barca... it was just the wrong move for him and has stagnated his career.

Personally I just don't really think we need him, but I suppose we don't know who is leaving LFC.

I have to say that his Youtube player video is quite possibly the most uneventful one I've ever seen. I've seen plenty over the years and they normally manage to make any player look on the same level as Messi, however this one, which is apparently a montage of his skills, shows him passing the ball 5 feet, sometimes possibly 10 feet, there is one time as well where he manages to run with the ball in space for about 5 seconds unchallenged.

He's going to have a shock to the system playing over here that's for sure.

Illaramendi has a great passing range and key to the role in this country, has quick feet to get himself out of trouble and evade danger. He also has excellent positional sense.

He is an Alonso as opposed to a Mascherano. He is a player who sets the tempo of a game and at Madrid he's stagnated as a young kid getting signed was never going to get the chance to shine when they already have Alonso. Then of course Real watch the World Cup and want a galatico, they don't need to take a chance on this kid so sign Toni Kroos.

He should have joined a more modest club from Sociedad like Alonso did. But I think he'd soon get his career back on track if he arrived at Anfield. I reckon he'd have doubled in value by January and would make the Spain squad for the Euros no problems.

Rodgers liked Leon Britton, who was basically the one who set the tempo compared to a destroyer. Illaramendi would make sense, and of course, he's a player who had massive potential, but stagnated i.e. Sturridge. He's the kind of player we should be targeting as I have no doubt he'd join another good club and restart his career. He's an underperforming player with potential.

                Would prefer Kovocic.

They play such different roles really it comes down to whether we need a defensive or more offensive minded mid. I think we probably need a defensive minded one more, unless we sell Markovic.

Would be happy if either came.

I think we're looking for deep lying playmaker rather than a defensive midfielder, Kovacic can play that role.

Nothing wrong with that type of player I suppose and I hope you're right that he can re-discover his early form (ala Sturridge). If we sign him that is.

It would certainly seem a more Rodgers style option.

I think because we don't know what way Rodgers is going to set us up next season or what style of football he is going to play.. IMO that's why there is such mixed reactions to a lot of the players we've been getting linked to.

                                It's a good point.

I'd like to think Rodgers has a clear plan as to how he wants to play next season and has the conviction to see it through (in 90 minutes and over a season ... give or take). It may be what saved his job in the end-of-season review.

Pre season will be interesting at least.
