I saw that and ignored the comparison as any knowledgeable football fan knows that it isn't true. Yes Atletico sell players but they spend big on replacements - strikers being the obvious area. They are the third biggest club in Spain so the Leicester comparisons are also ridiculous.

Re Messi though - I believe that he is the best player we have ever seen but 5 games without a goal for him is a crisis and he did not play anywhere near the level we expect of him last night. He is always the talisman that wins them games when they most need it and he didn't/couldn't do it last night. I do wonder if there is something going on affecting him, maybe he is simply just tired?

At times it is staggering how clueless Giles, Brady, and Dunphy are when it comes to the modern game.

Had to laugh when Dunphy was trying to big up Godin as if he were some unknown player that nobody had heard of before.


As for Messi in recent games.... I think it may be more a case of how far some of the Barca players behind him have regressed this season and how unbalanced they look as a unit than it being a big regression on the part of Messi.

It's odd because you'd think Brady would know more being at Arsenal so long and having been involved with Ireland but outside of world stars they are poor for knowledge.

Giles knows football but is way out of touch with the modern players, coaches etc. He just says it as he sees it but has become cliched and so old fashioned that modern tactics go over his head, although he'd prob question the tactics in the first place - "play the game on it merits boys......"

Football data is freely available to modern fans via the internet and we have all seen the youtube clips etc. Football Manager (for those of us that played it) is another portal to see the various wonderkids floating around so listening to the lads can be painful when most fans have far more knowledge on players, coaches etc. What we don't have is experience in the game so they need to bin one of them and bring in a younger more knowledgeable person to compliment the others. Liverpool will reportedly receive £300,000 from Manchester City after the latter's progress to the Champions League semi-final triggered a clause in the agreement that took Raheem Sterling to the Etihad Stadium in July.

Sterling, 21, was sold by Liverpool for an initial £44m with another £5m dependent on City's success during his time at the club.

That's the best draw City could get. Real were very lucky to get through and will probably get knocked out now. Seems like City are destined to win it this year despite being poor, like us in 2005 and Chelsea.
