we had an idiotic manager who consistently made poor decisions in the transfer market. If klopp said i want this guy at any price im 100% certain that we would do the deal and he would already be our player. Maybe klopp feels that for £38m we could do much better.

The fees for benteke, carroll, lallana, downing all show how bad we are at recruiting players but its not a self-perpetuating cycle or at least it doesnt have to be.

at £25m teixeira isnt in the same bracket as gotze but at £38m he is. I would rather have gotze.

Torres wasnt either, he'd been touted to leave for years and we paid a record fee for him

We did it with Torres, Sturridge and Suarez. I say forget Teixeira and move on to the next big striker before he's worth ridiculous fees. Ighalo?
its almost a myth that this can happen at elite level because players arent given the time to develop properly.

Jamie vardy - non-league to being the top PL striker in 3/4 seasons could never happen at LFC / city / utd / arsenal because we operate in a world where a manager may not be there in 2 years and results are needed immediately.

If £50m is what they want, then I don't want us even risking it. £38m in January is a hell of a lot too, I'd have no problem with the club deciding against it.

torres, alonso, mascherano, suarez, sturridge - all around the 22-24 age bracket when purchased i think. LFC didnt unearth gems they just polished already excellent players.

Just pay it off over 4 years. I do it all the time in FM. Tried and true.

Torres was arguably the most sought after young striker in the world when we bought him. Suarez was a consistently high performer in the Dutch league + Champions league & Sturridge was calculated gamble for a prospect whose career had stalled.

Teixeira (now) is probably not at the level of Suarez or Torres when we bought them but might get there but for the money they want it is too much of a risk. I'd be interested to see if we go back in for him in the summer - we tried so hard to sign Kono yet chose to ignore him when he was free!

Re getting Tex and his kind before they become big - I think the club are trying to do this (Illori, Alberto, Allan, Grujić, Markovic) but they are getting as many wrong as right. He moved to Shakthar after two seasons at Vasco when he was 19 and it can be hard to get work permits here for players like that. Shakthar changed the mould but buying loads of young Brazilians, developing them and selling them for massive money but they don't have the work permit issues we have here.

I remember we were linked to Aguero when he was at Independiente, Falco when he was at River & Jackson Martinez when he was at Chiapas (Mexican club before Atletico) but in all cases work permit issues were cited as reasons not to go after them.

In other cases we have gone after South American kids and they have bombed - Paletta was the CB for Argentina who had just won U-20 WC with Messi + he had an Italian passport IIRC, Coates had just won the best young player in the Copa America, Lucas had just won the Golden Ball for the best player in the Brazilian Championship (as an ahem goal scoring midfielder) and look how long it took him to settle.

The one thing with buying South American kids now is the complexity of the transfers and the corruption that goes with it. So many of them are partly owned by the club, their parents, agents & investment groups which is why so many of them end up in Russia/Ukraine or in Europe with Atletico/Porto who have ties to the biggest investment groups like Doyen for example.

I'm not sure where I am going with this but I absolutely agree that we need to get players BEFORE they get massive but it isn't easy. Signing these guys means they may not get game time with us and develop as they would have if they had gone elsewhere. The other thing is that there is so much exposure to football now it is hard to pick up these guys for small fees - China is throwing mad money for young Brazilians which is jacking their price up.

They were extremely talented players when we bought them and barring Sturridge they were record fees, Torres had maybe gone off the boil at Athletico, Sturridge wasnt getting a game and Suarez was voted the best player in Holland but was in disgrace for some reason
Biting in the PSV game - he obviously got a taste for it after that

Their lack of work permit issues make it easy for them to gamble on these kind of players while we have no choice until they are a finished article and fit the work criteria for a permit.

For a guy that never has played for his national team or proven himself in one of the big leagues, I say hell no. 25 million maybe and recruiting him mid season maybe 28 million.

Since when does playing international football count for anything in regards talent???

Christian Benteke £32m capped 24 times by Belgium and still ****ing dog****

As I said the other day I would rather sign someone I had never heard of with little or no credentials than someone I have heard of who I know is ****ing ****e

That happens all the time also - didn't Mascherano get an Italian passport, same as Lucas? Normally they have to be **** hot to qualify for work permits.

Well if you are 26 and have never been called up to the national team..my opinion!

I'm not really concerned with the call up thing, considering how poor Brazil have been, and the amount of strikers out there that can play, could well be they've been calling up the wrong players, due to bad managerial choices.

I just see him as a similar profile to Suarez when we bought him, so a similar fee would be about right imo. Of course if he went on to be as good as Suarez it would be money well spent even at £50mill, but that is one massive gamble, and one that's failed numerous times when taking prolific strikers from poorer leagues, so Shaktahr's price is not imo worth paying .
