Apparently Texeira is a lifelong fan of LFC. His idol growing up was Danny Murphy.
      Modifying post.

My big worry is that we have tried to spread our budget too much in the past and ended up buying ****e (admittedly weve bought ****e for big money too lol)

@ukrfootballnet claiming Shakhtar have lowered the asking price for Teixeira to €45m (had been €50m). Liverpool has offered €37m. #LFC

I think there is a lot in that, I'd rather get in one top player a year, like Wenger is doing with Ozil, Sanchez and Cech, than numerous 50/50 players.

But this season as well I predict we'll see prices sky-rocket, especially in the summer, Basel is turning down 27 million euros for Embolo, Napoli turning down 25 for Gabbiadini.

I reckon we'll look back after a year and there will be no wincing for 50 million for Texeira (unless he flops ).
              * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Arsenal had to scrimp until they paid off the stadium before they could go for the big players ala Ozil & Sanchez. Cech they just got lucky with and for an absolute steal.

We need quality in our team and to buy for the first 11 and some will cost a lot (Teixeira) because of who they are (Shakthar) with or our lack of Champions League etc. We have shown in the past that we will pay top dollar (Benteke, Firmino, Lovren, Lallana) so if Klopp really wants him then we need to back him.

The one that Klopp will give us is pull with the good players available for a reasonable price so that balances the big fees - take Xhaka at £20m (ish). A number of clubs will be all over that but he might want to play for Klopp rather than Van Gaal for example.

I'm worried that we are leaving this so late - Shakthar don't tend to budge so we either will pay it or we need to move on. This guy is a first 11 player, available now so can impact the rest of our season and most importantly is he is willing to come to us. Get it done...........we can sell to Barca in 2 years for a massive profit

Despite the comedy value of the tweet, the notion is ridiculous. Shakhtar don't need to lower their asking price as it shows a sign of weakness/desperation which can be exploited. And Shakhtar hold all the cards.

In reality they'll keep the original price and then wait for the offers to reach the amount they feel they want to accept.

does lots of money mean a top player or vice versa?

I'd say Carroll, Lovren, Lallana, Benteke, Firmino, markovic, Keane, Downing, Aqualani, Balotelli - all big money signings and all failures or overpriced

I just read an excellent point by someone on Twitter - why pay £6m for Matip now (+ wages) when he could be got for free in the summer and we could use the extra money to pay for Teixeira.

He can cover both CBs and DM (lets face it the squad is injury prone this season) and he can be integrated into the team now, this summer is going to be a messy one - Euros, Copa, Olympics and the USA tour for Liverpool. If you can get a player in now its worth doing so I think.

I think most of us baulked at the prices for these players, Firmino maybe excepted and I find it harsh to include him in this group.

It's not the same paying top dollar or top dollar, if you buy from the Prem you pay top price for an average or good player, but you can get quality players for the same price, look at Benteke and Carroll, we could buy Xhaka and Teixeira for that amount. Markovic was expensive but I think he didn't get a fair chance.

That is valid but do you think it is better to put the money towards Tex and get him now and wait for Matip until the summer or buy Matip now and not get Tex....?

I'd prefer a shiny new Brazilian who'll fire us to the top 4

totally - and that's my point, our record of paying big money isn't great. We'll not be able to give Balotelli away this summer and took massive hits on Carroll, Downing etc just as we will do on Benteke.

We need to spend "smart" rather than just big. If there is a player out there with a proven record who will instantly improve us then we should pay big if we need to. We cant however keep having to recover from paying over the odds for average players sold at a loss.

this summer changes the game though so we'll almost have two models - recruit young home grown players and develop and buy expensive "foreigners"

if we wait until the summer there's probably going to be a massive signing on fee too plus I'd expect wages to also be higher (given there'd be no fee involved)
