No there isn't. When it comes to football Europe > China.

Maybe Jiangsu just needed to add some height to their first team?

If you see all clubs as being on an equal footing. But in reality they are not. Not financially, not in relation to global popularity, History or Success. No metrics are the same. Apart from maybe they are richer. Even then thats a big if.

Its not a superiority complex, its just fact. European and South American clubs are better in all measures.

If you are talking purely business wise, then all clubs are equal standing. But football has to have emotion, otherwise what's the point?

I think there is a big difference between the fans (emotion is key), the spectacle (again emotion is a bit part) and the professional lives of the players.

I think the point that Dom is making is how true is the statement long term. If the Chinese league buys many of the worlds best players then it becomes a big thing to win. The assumption that toiling in PL obscurity is better than being a successful part of an exciting growing league because of history feels loaded with the same assumptions that do accompany more genuinely colonial views of the world.

No that's not what I'm saying at all.

Empires are built and they crumble. It's not all about history and looking back, but the potential to grow and become the biggest and best. Why shouldn't the Chinese be able to do that? And why shouldn't big name players help them achieve it.

It wasn't long ago we were laughing at City signing Ribinho and his ilk. Now we generally accept that City are a better, and better run club than ours regardless of history. Laughing at their past is futile.
                Oh I don't know.

I read that the Chinese government is trying to up the status of football in China as they will bid for a future World Cup, that is why the billionaires are throwing money at anyone who will join them. The bigger the profile the better for them.

They do tend to have some interesting ideas though:

Imagine City selling Aguero to Leicester to help them perform better in the Champs League next year

The Chinese can build something all they want, but the competitions with the prestige and where the best players compete are currently in Europe. That doesn't go away overnight, and the likelihood of Chinese competition usurping traditional European tournaments within the duration of Alex Teixeira's career is highly unlikely.

It feels a bit NASL. It doesn't seem to be built on any foundation other than signing big names from European competition for vast sums of money to kickstart something new. It may work in the long term, but it won't be the place to go while Teixeira is playing.

Brazilian forward Alex Teixeira has criticised Liverpool for failing to make a firm proposal to sign him, and has explained his surprise move to Chinese side Jiangsu Suning.

The prolific forward has left Shakhtar Donetsk to join the big spending revolution in Chinese football, with Ramires and Jackson Martinez also moving to China in the past week.

Liverpool made two firm attempts to sign Teixeira in the January transfer window, with the club seeing bids of £24.6million and £28million rejected by Shakhtar, before the Ukrainian club refused to sell for less than £53million.

However, Shakhtar accepted an offer of £38million for the player and he will now travel to China to finalise the move.

Teixeira nontheless still admits he still holds hope of one day playing in the Premier League, despite Liverpool’s failed bid.

Speaking to Shakhtar’s official website, he said: “Let’s put it like this: everyone always knew that I wanted to stay in Europe and move to the English Premier League club. But, unfortunately, all the proposals that came from them, were somewhat windy and did not contain anything concrete. Now I have received a serious offer from China.

“I wanted to make it to the English Premier League one day. But until now, all my thoughts have been focused on Shakhtar. As I said, everything happens so fast that I don’t even have time to realize it..”

Yep. I didn't see this when I replied, but it's precisely the point I'm making.

That article doesn't do anything to paint him a good light. Highlights he's not really that bothered where he plays as long as he gets a huge pay packet. Probably thinks he'll be seen as a brave pioneer taking the opportunity to play in China... but anyone with any common sense can see he's just jumping on a cash-loaded bandwagon.

Ah well - I'm sure Southampton have another "star" we can buy off them in our ongoing quest for just enough mid-table glory to keep putting the prices up.

                            **** FSG.

Only one reason he's gone to China, you can talk about colonialism all you like.

To make out it's Colonialism to call it as it is is plain daft, the Prem, Spain, Germany ARE the best leagues as we stand, it's about the here and now, i don't say he should come because the Premiership is in England, the fact is that above leagues are where the better players play, and want to play, it's gives them money and challenging football, with a view to winning the titles that matter today.

So for him to go to China now, is going for the money imo, he got noticed due to our interest, and he's made some cash, he's happy to do that fair enough, he's set up for life now, but please don't try and tell me he went for anything but a big pay packet, or that it's colonialism to think so.
