In these circumstances VAR needs to call the ref to have a second look without giving judgement on it. Let them see it in real time on the pitch and a replay to make a decision.

It wasn’t clear and obvious to overturn the referee’s decision.
      Are we winning?

The fact is all peno decisions and potentials are reviewed by VAR, and certainly in the manner of awarded calls, the ref and linesman (if involved) should be made to review on replay. The game is already stopped and as much time as needed to resolve the call should be taken.
One of the most damning replays was actually the one VAR pumped out as clarification.

        Farcical

Anyone who claims that was a pen should have their football officiating credentials removed.

          It was though.

The clear and obvious thing just muddies the waters. That decision is one that just encourages players to draw contact and go down. That’s what Kane does. If he knows he is not getting a shot away he is instantly looking for contact so he can dive.

That’s a massive grey area for clear and obvious.

            yes.

And to say "there was contact" is bollocks, as often the contact is initiated by the attacker throwing out a leg or falling against the defender.
Thats just blatant cheating and its ruined the game forever.

when ITV had the dck head ex-ref (walton?) on and they trying to justify it as not being "clear and obvious error" then you know the game has been ****ed. Total ****. Who cares if the ref made an error - is it a peno or not??? All these ****wits had to do was watch a rugby match and see how the video ref is done properly.

I'd like to see them miked up as well. We'd see the clear and obvious errors then.

This is how its applied in cricket though.

If the video umpire cannot say for sure its a mistake, the on field umpire decision remains.

I much prefer it, as all VAR is doing is fixing **** ups, not marginals that is down the the ref.

VAR on the whole has been fairly good this Euros, as has the standard of reffing. But celebrating a goal is celebrating a goal now. Not like that total **** we had in the prem where everything was checked.

If the on field ref gives a pen the only way that decision is overturned is if VAR shows that there is clearly no contact. The major issue with that is the attacker has to be stupid if they don't ensure there is contact, so nothing gets overturned. Effectively contact = no overturn. On the other hand if the ref sees there is contact but deems it minimal, then the only way that is overturned is if it's GBH.

The majority of VAR pen awards (which aren't given by the on field ref) are usually for minor infringements, very occasionally the ref misses something big. Most fans want the big decisions to be right, which are usually the subjective ones called by the on field ref, which VAR can't look at, which makes it almost pointless
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I have no particular love for England, but it was a pen IMO.

Why has no one mentioned Sterling's attempt to purposely hang his leg to the side to initiate a trip? That didn't work but I do think the subsequent tackle was a foul and therefore a penalty.

                        What tackle?

The game is ****ing ludicrous. We're now at the stage where ANY contact in the box is a foul and therefore a penalty.

I think the "clear and obvious error" thing is stupid to be honest. If it is debatable, then the ref should be told "i don't agree with you, go check the telly on the side" - or else, let the video ref be the match referee. He has the benefit of hindsight so can overrule the on-field decision. Like in rugby.

The current set up essentially results in scenarios where it shouldn't have been a peno......but it wasn't a clear and obvious error by the ref (because there was contact.....possibly initiated by the attacking player) so they go with the ref's original decision. I actually think sterling was lucky not to be carded

Agree with you about the VAR and refereeing in general though. Although to be honest I think the champions league is fine too. For me the biggest improvement is the fact that they don't press pause and start drawing lines on the screen. That is ****in farcical by the premier league. It's ****e like thats ruining football.

What is annoying about the commentators as well was that they will never call an english player out on it. If Salah is genuinely tripped and goes down, then its all tut-tut and how that's not the english game.
