Released VAR footage from the Arsenal disallowed goal at the weekend. A few thoughts:
1. Why do they not look at the way he initially brings the ball down, because to me it is questionable as to whether that is chest shoulder or arm.
2. They do not mention the ball hitting Cash's arm at all (IMO he is way too close to give a pen for that)
3. They say that they suspect it hits Havertz arm, now I know that they are looking for evidence that it doesn't hit the arm to over turn, but from the video it clearly does hit his arm, why not just say that it does? I know that there is a difference between the ball hitting him and it definitely being handball (or not enough to overturn onfield decision).

I feel that these should all be considered in doing the VAR properly even if they are immediately ruled out. My instinct on this is that the ref probably got it right but the VAR process is a cluster****

Looks pretty clear but I would like to see another angle to rule out Jota flicking his leg into the contact.

The whole system needs an overhaul. It is absolutely fine in practice, the tech will make a difference and there will still be debatable incidents, there just should be less of them not more.

Things I woud change instantly.

1. VAR ref is part of travelling ref group working from within stadium (or from appropriate venue) this creates more cohesion with main stakeholders.

2. Clock off. Stop the clock for VAR decision. This removes pressure to make decision at break neck speeds, yes it will break the game up a bit, but it should lead to greater clarity and accuracy.

3. Mic refs and VAR up. Transparency is everything and at least understanding why a decision has been made instantly enables all viewers to follow the game with this understanding at the very least. As soon as there is a decision between VAR and Refs it should be broadcast.

The money exists to do all of this. All of this happens in a sport I frequently refer to on this thread, and that is a sport with far less financial power.

The rules in football seem to have been set up to legislate for a degree of ambiguity as if thats a good thing. Clarity and accountability should tidy a fair amount of this up. As mentioned, we may still disagree, but at least we know what we are disagreeing with.

THat would work, once there are specfically trained VARS in place & not just ref-mates

Good to see someone backing all teams no matter who they support. It’s stupid to laugh at another team getting done by VAR the whinge when it happens to your team. This needs to be talked about non stop from everyone until it’s sorted.

This season, VAR and refereeing in general has gone to ****. I’m sure I’m very biased, but it feels like it’s affected us more than anyone else. We’ve had a few that they admitted after was wrong- the spurs goal, the macalister red card, the handball against Arsenal (not sure are there others), and a few others that were also blatantly wrong - gross shoulda been sent off for Brighton for the penalty incident, kluivert shoulda been sent off, shoulda had a penalty vs chelsea first day for Jackson’s handball, etc. I’m sure there’s others I’m forgetting. Then on top of that, I feel like we’ve gotten crap luck on the 50/50 ones from refs- Trent getting booked vs chelsea for taking too long to take a throw in, him getting booked for throwing the ball a few yards away vs Newcastle, macalister getting booked for imaginary yellow card after being hacked down, Elliott booked for dissent vs arsenal, after odegaard did way worse for 3 incidents, etc.

There’s always gonna be some incidents that fans aren’t happy with, but I feel like this season there’s been way too many undefendable errors. It’s easily cost us at least 5/6 points, and I’d be surprised if we lose the league by more than that. So basically, if we don’t win the title, it’s not our fault.
