It used to be 40 points for safety but it seems like lower totals seem to survive these days. Everton average 12th with 40 points don't they?Comment

I think the 40 points line is partly due to the number being more round than, for arguments sake, 38 points even though that translates neatly to a point a game and partly due to the old 42 game seasons.
In 24 complete 38 game seasons in the PL era the highest points scoring teams to go down achieved

33 (5)
34 (5)
35 (1)
36 (5)
37 (1)
71% of the time 37 points would be enough to stay up 75% of the time with a good enough goal difference.
The remaining seasons were 38 (2) , 39 (1) 40 (2), 42 (1). Of those six 3 were before the turn of the century.
I would say the money is creating a gap. The bottom is getting further from the very top and the rest are bunching up. Teams like us through being well run and solid transfer policies or Chelsea previously and Man City currently through mass spending will step away from the pack creating the exceptional season. Top 7 all time 38 game season points hauls are by us and those 2, 5 of them set in the last 4 years (including our current tally).Football without Origi is nothingComment

Id say the only gap is us and City... But we have had to spend well to get there, and will have to continue to do so to compete with City.
Our financial might is no greater than most of the other top 6. Sucess is self sustaining, but all teams eventually drop off. City are playing in their own league financially, it would seem.
