Thinking about this a bit more, doesn't a player need to become 'active' before being offside? If they are fouled prior to receiving the ball, did they ever become active and therefore, isn't the inital offside position irrelevant and a penalty can still be awarded? As there was a pull, shouldn't it have been a pen?

I would argue forcing the defender to take action makes you an active participant

Despite Alan Smith - 'That's a pen. Trip on Saka. VAR won't be overuling that' a minute beforehand.
2 angles was all that's needed to show it wasn't a pen.

The very fact you're trying to get on the end of the ball is enough to judge you active.

The very fact that it appears as though they weren't interested in him being initially off is rather worrying.
