I understand the marketing etc but the bottles are rather somewhat out of context, you put a bottle or a glass of water out at a table like that and the assumption is that it is there for the speaker to drink. Putting a bottle of beer there in front of a player in a pre or post match interview probably has them thinking WTF
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

It’s just marketing tbh they’ve paid god knows what in terms of sponsorship and will want their stuff in eye view across as many eyeballs as possible. You might find them not there going forwards as they don’t want the adverse publicity but whatever romantic view people have of these sorts of tournaments they exist to make money.

I'm just waiting for a just eat guy to interrupt the interview with a takeaway for them

Thank you for toning your response down.

Seriously, though. What does it matter if there's a bottle of pop on a table, any more than having its logo on the board behind the screen, or plastered around the pitch, or anywhere else? It just doesn't, imo. If it does to you, then fair enough.

But then winding that into a rant about uefa not caring about the fans, whatever that means, doesn't make much sense to me either.

Anyway, if you're happy, I'm happy.

I hope they put some cheeseburgers on at the next presser.
          Oh I don't know.

I think they are significantly different. Advertising hoardings are clearly tournament sponsorships. Shirt logos are clearly club sponsorships. A bottle on a table in front of a person implies that it is that person’s drink. It’s an association of a product with an individual (player in this instance) and an implied personal endorsement. Ronaldo clarifying that there is no such endorsement is totally fair enough imo.

I take your point, but I don't think I agree.

We all know how hyper controlled and staged managed these things are.

If Ronaldo turned up swigging from a bottle of Pepsi, I reckon there's more than a fair chance he'd be asked not to do do that again.
                Oh I don't know.

Yes, we’re savvy adults who understand these things and don’t idolise individual footballers. Lots of the audience are neither adults nor savvy, and I think Ronaldo was talking to them.

It says something about how crap the tournament has been so far that we're discussing soft drinks.

I think he was just saying that Coke is a **** drink. Which is true. And off message. And I don't think he'll say it again.

I'm not getting into the banality of this, but of course there's a difference and a significant one at that.

My brother was as he went to all the games and knew the inner circle - I stayed with lads from my home town and met up with the brother on game days. He got me tickets etc - was some craic at one campsite with a loads of Croatians……all looked ex military (Balkan war) types……they were terrifying. They had some home brew poitin type thing and made us drink shots with them - every picture they took we were dragged in and they were doing nazi salutes. They had dark eyes that you knew had seen and done heavy ****.

I remember some nights before the game there were riots in the square in Poznań - Lech ultras and Croatian fans going hard at it. A load of pissed up innocent drunken Irish lads caught in the crossfire and the the Polish police got involved - carnage

He mightn't bother doing press conferences for the rest of the tournament now instead. Which would be a good response to UEFA too.

We all know that top level sports is a business. But I think the way the likes of UEFA, Sky Sports and a few others tried to portray the European Super League as being all about greed and how they were dismayed at that, is what annoys a lot of people. So when organisations like that try to portray themselves as having some morals (which they did by calling out the greed of the ESL) then when they are shown up to be greedy as **** themselves, then people will be annoyed.

It is a bit like FIFA putting out promotional videos of african kids getting free footballs and shirts to play with on a new lovely pitch. Great stuff guys......but if you could perhaps not have taken bribes for the last 50 years or so - which has currently resulted in world cup stadiums being built with slave labour in Qatar - it would have been a bit better.

I've been on a stag party in Warsaw many years ago - great craic but wouldn't like to get caught up in any agro.

On John Delaney, I'd recommend the book on him - Champagne Football. Compelling reading. Was really good. A mate of mine had told me about the time J-D got ******ed with the fans and it is covered in this book.........they took off his shoes and made him drink a pint from one of them

"OOOHHHHHHH John Delaney.......he used to be a ****** but he's alright now"
