Surely if you had your pick Pedri is the player you'd want from this tournament. 18 and already good enough for spain first team.

I thought the opening 15 mins Trippier was getting alot of space but Mancini sorted out that overload. Apart from that imo Italy dominated the game and England played like Burnley.Originally posted by frank the tank View PostNah not sure about that to be honest mate. I thought at one stage England were going to win it inside 25 mins - Kane dropped deep and found space really well - and Trippier was getting acres of space. They had them on the ropes.
Although to be fair, Italy had a good spell in 5 mins before half time - so england were probably happy to hear the half time whistle.

I hadn’t appreciated until this morning that the three guys who missed were all black and it is so depressing to see the way they have been treated with the usual barrage of racism online.
They are trying to stand for something more, this team, and it just shows that they are nowhere close to making a difference and they cannot do it alone.
I was thinking the same regarding body language.
Also someone on here pointed out the players who missed were black and as soon as that was mentioned I knew we'd be waking up to racial abuse stories and sadly I was right. Unfortunately there is still a very long way to go on this
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

They certainly is, but it’s not simply the case that these things happen despite the campaign to abolish them, independently of it. The greater the backlash and the more stigma that is placed upon racial abuse, the more effective racial abuse is seen to be by those with intent to abuse. So whilst the stigmatising of racial language et cetera has a positive effect overall, it’s very hard to remove its use from those who’s primary focus is the hate and abuse. The minority who want to see the word burn become even more drawn to it.Originally posted by Exiled_red View Post

Didi Hamann summed it up best.
England lacked the winners mentality and ambition to win the tournament.
They started 7 more defensive minded players and sat back after going 1-0 up on 2 mins....when player for player their squad is better than the Italians.
Mancini spotted the problem and sorted it, moved to a 3 man backline when attacking in the second half because that's how deep England were, no need for 4 at the back.
For some reason they still think they cannot expect to dominate a game against the Italys, Spains, Frances etc. but they have all the players and technical ability to do so.
Ditch one of Phillips or Rice, ideally the latter, build around Bellingham and they've again all the individual ability to win the world cup.Y.N.W.A!!!!!!

Southgate is a conservative coach - justified as well getting to the final.Originally posted by Corndog View PostDidi Hamann summed it up best.

I felt sorry for him really - Sterling has had a great tournament, yet he should have been hooked as it was his worst performance, Saka has done well in previous games - looked a bit lost when he came on.
If I were to sum up what Southgate got wrong last night:
- Failure to respond to Italian's tactical switch quick enough - we dropped deeper and deeper
- Not bringing Grealish on sooner - to get some possession and easy fouls for
- Thinking that practice penalties and actual penalties are the same thing - experience trumps practice. Walker, Henderson, Sterling, Stones should have been in the queue ahead of Rashford, Sancho and Saka.
Well done to the Italians, they deserved the win, but England could have won it.
Embarrassing from a sizeable number of fans as well - a reminder why generally I couldn't give a **** about Ingerland.James Philip Milner Fanclub #1

In Germany or Italy, it's not justified unless you win the tournament.
Consistently over time, the chances to win tournaments will be less if you go in with an acceptance that you cannot dominate top teams.Y.N.W.A!!!!!!

Can’t disagree, other than the man for man comment. The England squad was full of nearly/maybe players, lots of them have barely a year, maybe two, of top flight football. There was lots of depth, but not that much strength. There can’t have been many teams in the whole tournament with a worse centre midfield than England. The defence is solid with proven players, but apart from Kane, (and arguably grealish and Sancho, neither of whom were favoured by Southgate) the rest is made up of players who wouldn’t necessarily be consistently first 11 picks at title challenging clubs.Originally posted by Corndog View PostDidi Hamann summed it up best.

Take Saka, getting all sorts of praise for the tournament.. he did pretty well for a young lad, but he wasn’t particularly good excluding the young lad caveat. And there are no caveats about promising players etc on the score sheet.
Or Kalvin Phillips. Did very well at pressing and breaking up play, but was utterly hopeless with the ball. The guy has zero situational awareness, he has no idea what’s going on outside of his direct eye line. Yet, again, hailed as having a great tournament.
It was a one dimensional team. Defend well and hope a tricky forward can produce something unlikely, or a dive for a pen. England’s football was bad for the vast majority of the tournament, and with home advantage and the best draw possible, the Germany result was the only one of real note. Southgate’s luck must have run out with easy WC and Euros draws consecutively. England were the fourth best side in the competition at best, man for man.Last edited by Kenneth; 12-07-21, 12:27 PM.Trey Nyoni: countdown to stardom-2 years1year0.5 years

If you could have your pick of players from the tournament then you probably have to snap up Chiesa - who was brilliant all tournament and i reckon would be come a genuine world class winger under Klopp and Pedri - who as ive already said is destined for greatness. Incredible talent and already running the Spanish midfield at 18."When a man insults my country I insult him, by taking his woman" Tony Yeboah

It was such a massive, massive chance for them last night. You could see the draw open up as soon as Germany were there next opponent.
Look at Belgium, a really talented squad, but they have suffered from the exact opposite of England. Getting a tough draw after winning their group.
That is 2 tournaments in a row where the path to a final has opened up for England. Then on top of that you have a home final with majority home support. It is not easy to win an international tournament.
You need luck as well as ability and it is fair to say England have a decent amount of both. But. When it is there for you. When you are 25 mins from picking up the trophy you have to go and win it. You have to be bold. And England were neither and that has cost them this phenomenal opportunity.Modifying post.
