It's true, Gerrard does go missing in some big games, but yesterday I wouldn't say he went missing so much as was just poor.Originally posted by Marky18 View Postgo missing in big games.
Come on people lets not deny it, he does disappear in SOME big games, it was there for all to see the dsy, at least Xabi put the boot in and looked like he really wanted it, Gerrard was outfought and outplayed by Gilberto(class act btw) and a French youngster, leaves alot to be desired.
Not the first time and something tells me not the last
Simply not good enough for a Captain of Liverpool in my opinion.
He seemed too shackled to his defensive duties to really get forward with his marauding runs enough, and yet wasn't quite diligent enough to deny Rosicky the time and space to get off his shot for the first goal.
However, I disagree that Xabi was more up for it, IMO I thought he was pretty poor by his standards as well - showed some nice passing etc. but to be honest I'd expect nothing less from a player of his calibre. What I would not expect to see was the shambolic way he did some of the simple things, and the needless possession he conceded on more than one occasion.
Also, if you're looking for a scapegoat, then really all eyes have to turn to the defence. Yes, Gerrard should have been closer to Rosicky for the first one, but what the **** was Johnny Riise doing letting Hleb have all that space down the right? As for the second, quite frankly I'm mystified as to how we allowed Rosicky to waltz through our defence like that and I thought Dudek could and should have done a lot lot better.
Third goal? What can you say? Carra had a mare, should have been in Row Z and yet ended up on the toe of Henry as he burst into the box from left wing. How many times have we seen him do that - by now everyone should have a pretty clear idea of what comes next, and yet nobody got close to him and Dudek didn't get close to the shot. Again, poor effort from the Dude.
As for Gerrard being out-fought in the middle, well, I think that's a bit disingenuous tbh. IMO Arsenal effectively bypassed our midfield on too many occasions because of the innate pace and movement their team plays with. Held up as a direct comparison to the occasionally laborious and often pedestrian football we play, it was a sobering sight to behold. Yes, we've been improving of late, but fundamentally I just don't think we have the same kind of qualities as their players to allow us to play that particular brand of football.
We dominated them for the first twenty minutes at least IMO, but as soon as we conceded that goal it was always gonna be a helluva battle, because Arsenal like nothing more than to hit back on the break, and they did that to great effect yesterday. Essentially, sloppy defending and conceding two really soft goals (thought the first one was a bit special) were our downfall.
If you want to hold that up as an example of Gerrards unsuitability to be Captain, be my guest, but he wasn't *that* bad yesterday. Yes, it would have been nice to see more, but like many have said - he's only human.
Everyone's entitled to have a bad day at the office

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

All players have peaks and troughs, Gerrards problem is he sets the bar very high and people expect him to do what he did in Istanbul every game. Unfortunately that is not realistic. You compare him to Gilberto who in my opinion is an ordinary player who just happens to be playing the best football of his career at the moment.Originally posted by Marky18 View Postgo missing in big games.

Gerrard does not go missing in big games, if anything he saves his best performances for the big games and not just the European cup final. If you don't think Gerrard is good enough I'd like to know who you think is? and what time your next appointment is.

Gerrard is more about impact than control - he drifts in and out of games and can go missing for long periods. However, he is one of the few players who can singlehandedly change the outcome of a match - score you a goal, send in a perfect pass etc., but rarely can it be said that he runs the midfield. Against real quality sides we need a Sisoko/Hamann type player to make sure that the gap that appeared between Gerrard/Alonso and our defence is well and truly plugged. Other 'lesser' teams may give the ball away cheaply, but the same could not be said for Arsenal - in this case we needed defensive midfield cover and without any effective cover Arsenal managed to look dangerous every time they hit us on the break. Stevie g. will be back on the right when Momo comes back - guaranteed!

Gerrard can't do everything on his own, he is surrounded by average players, the like of garcia, crouch, pennant, gonzalez, imagine how good he would be if he could play with the likes or Rooney, Henry, Fabregas, Cole, Ronaldo etc.... imagine Ronaldinho playing in our team he would be half the player...
The amount of times gerrard plays a ball into feet expecting to power forward and get the ball back, and either the player fails to control it or misplaces the pass is untrue. until Benitez signs some talent in the forward/wide areas we are going to see Gerrard play inconsistently at times.
