LFC under Rafa - Punching above our weight

I'll be honest, i'm not in the best mood today. I'm cheesed off with all the rubbish I've read & heard about about last nights debacle. Lets get a few facts straight here.

Under Rafa, LFC have performed miles better than they have a right to do. Forget all this nonsense that we should be challenging for the league every year, for the moment those days are gone.

Why? Money thats why. Basically, the more cash you have, the more success you have. Sure there are exceptions but basically theres a direct relationship between money & success.

Since Rafa's been at the club i'd say we are the 3rd or 4th richest club in England. Chelsea & Man U are miles ahead of us. I'd say we are on a par with Arsenal. So realistically, if Man U & Chelsea are well managed off & on the pitch, it will be very very hard to match them. Along the same lines if we are well managed off & on the pitch, teams like Spurs, Newcastle & the like shouldn't be able to match us. So are natural position in the league should be 3rd/4th. In Rafa's 2 seasons, he's finished 5th & 3rd. On top of that we've won the FA Cup, the most important domestic cup competition. all in all domestically, thats a pretty decent effort in my book.

Next to Europe. We are probably in the top 10 richest clubs in Europe, trying to compete with teams with millions more to spend than us. As we all know we won the CL 2 years ago & reached the last 16 last year, thats a massive over achievement for the 3rd richest club in England.

Since Rafa's been at LFC he cannot compete for the best players, as we don't have the cash. We can't buy a Rooney, a Ballack, a SWP or even a Carrick. We have to buy more middle of the range players, players on frees or players with a particular love of LFC. And yet despite this massive handicap, Rafa is expected to lead us to no.19. He's a great manager but not a miracle worker.

In our glory days we had as much money as anyone bar Man Utd. The gap between us was much narrower financially then, & as the country's best club, we generally had our pick of the talent. A modern day King Kenny, Barnes etc wouldn't come to LFC. We couldn't afford them & even if we could, if Chelsea or Man U came calling they'd probably go there.

Under Rafa we've won the most important club trophy in the world, something Wenger hasn't managed in a decade at Arsenal & Ferguson has managed only once in 20 odd years at the worlds richest club. Even Mourinho with all the riches at his disposal hasn't been able to guide Chesea to the ultimate promised land.

I'm not saying Rafa is beyond criticism, he's not. He ballsed up last night. But think beyond one match , to what the Spaniard has achieved with the 3rd richest club in England.

How did he balls it up last night ? Wenger played his reserve team as well. Would it have been desirable to put our full team out (and not counting the injuries) and still not been certain of qualification ?

He did the right thing, put our reserve team against another reserve team.

I think if we get turned over 6-3 at home then the manager has probably ballsed up somewhere.

I think he was wrong not to play a stronger team. Its easy in hindsight to say that but lets face it most of us were saying it before the game. The Carling cup was are best chance of a trophy this season & thats gone. I know players can't play every game but to me last night was more important than say Watford on saturday. We've won the League Cup 7 times, it wasn't meaningless then & isn't now. If our great mamagers of the 1970's & 80's thought it was good enough to bother with then so should Rafa in my view.

Remember United or another team being trounced by Arsenal 3 or 4 years ago in a Carling Cup match anyway.

We could easily have won that match yesterday (or at least gone to extra time) if The Dude didn't **** up on at least 3 goals.

Bob for what its worth I agree with what you've just said. Personally, winning the league is not something I currently expect us to do without an injection of finance. A failure to win the league is not something I'd get on Rafa's back about.

Its like anything praise him if we had won and call for his head if we didnt.

Last night was a freak bad display. Im sure Rafa didnt want to loose but how do you know if your fringe/Youth players are good enough??

Yes thats right you play them, now on last nights performance it seems they arent good enough, thats why the majority of them are the 2nd team and thats why we play or first team in the big matches FA Cup,League and CL

                  Completely agree.

I think Rafa has been a victim of his own early success. Winning the European Cup and the FA cup in his first 2 seasons was well beyond our expectations.

Last night served as a reality to check for many, including myself, all this talk of competing for the league when 2 of your main summer signings are Bellamy and Pennant was just folly. Good players yes, good enough to be regulars in a title contending team?, not even close.

And that's the point isn't it? We just can't afford the really top players. The difference makers. Overall I think Rafa has spent well. Alonso, Kuyt and Agger are all excellent signings but they still cost £30m combined. That's basically 2 seasons worth of transfer kitty on 3 players, and we're still at least half a dozen players short of a good squad.

That's why we need the DIC money, without it we'll stay where we are.

And whose choice was it to play Dudek? Rafa has ballsed these up. I was livid last night when I got the team line up txt to me and found out kids were playing. We were out of the FA cup ffs, do we really need to rest players now?

The Dude should have done better mate and Rafa did the right thing to allow him to rectify the situation, which obviously he ****ed up.

It's only the Carling Cup FFS.

Hang on. No one seems to be blaming the players here

They were ****e - these are players (bar Peltier, Palletta, Guthrie & maybe Gonzalez) who are seasoned professionals: Robbie, Bellamy, Gerrard, Aurelio, Hyypia, Dudek (55k a week my ar5e, thanks GH) & Garcia who should be expected to beat the Arsenal 2nd string - they just werent at the races - is that Rafas fault?

Not saying Rafa should/shouldn't have played them, but the team he put out was good enough to win - they f**ked up.
What do you mean it could've been anyone? Name me one person who's got a grudge against penguins

Well we've already been snotted in the league a few times too, and in games where you'd have expected some pride to be at stake.
