    local lads

i just read the article with steve heighway concerning the amount of
foreign players, and the lack of chances for british lads .Personally i agree
there are far too many in our game although obviously a lot of the imports are great to watch .
If there is no possibility of reducing the numbers coming in because of eu trade laws etc, why cant the fa just offer a bonus -extra points or something for teams competing in
the prem league with the required amount of uk players? it is their competition after all.
    Just a thought .

I disagree - if you're good enough, you'll make it, whatever your nationality. There'd be no sense in recruiting worldwide if there were ample good quality british lads available. For e, give me a team of high quality foregin lads than a bunch of kick and rush English any day of the week !!

I think if we start doing what you have suggested, we will see visible reduction of quality in the performances and of players on the pitch, and the quality of matches on the whole.

The problem as far as I'm concerend is lack of technique of domestic and local "talent" (possibly as a result of poor coaching) and the over-inflated transfer prices for homegrown players.

I suppose the main crux of Heighways argument centres around players like Carragher.

Today, would a player similar to Carragher get the number of first team games to improve? Or would he be deemed sub-standard?

Think back - Carragher was a pretty unremarkable player for many a year, until finally getting the necessary experience and opportunity to play CB.

                Interesting point.

sorry but didnt we win quite a lot in the past ,mainly with british nationals
                  and the odd import?
to suggest uk lads cant play the game anymore to me is just laughable, they are the same now as they always were - two legs ,one head etc.

The problem is poor scouting , we had the best around once upon a time .
                  Now we dont ,simple as.

Any decent British player will make it if he's good enough.

Not really. None of the major clubs is producing much in the way of home-grown talent, or signing young British talent from elsewhere in the country. The parks in Liverpool where I played as a kid, where you had to be there in the morning to claim an area to play a game or there would be no space left are completely deserted now - you literally couldn't find anywhere, but now I'm always amazed when I see kids kicking a ball around (not organised games on marked out pitches). Young kids have more distractions and either never get into the playing side or drop out early. In the 60s and 70s we played every day of the week in the park and all hoped to be footbalelrs above all else. The same hunger isn't there anymore.

in the case of Carra don't think the managers or coaching staff had that view, it was only the fans

as for ideal world would we off prefered the likes Kenny, Rush, Souness, Barnes and co to off been from Liverpool?

Someone said have at look at the parks there's no one there.

If the local kids arn't good enuff then why not go futher afield
Its times like these we learn to live again FF

                            True.
Who would have the biggest insentive to become decent footballer, a kid from western Europe or a kid from Africa? (Broad generalisation there, but you get the point).
Here in Norway footballers a the age of 20-22 don`t fancy a move to other countries (unless it`s a "big" club), while africans go out when they`re 15-16.
I`m not saying that`s it all good what happends to young african talents, but they have very little to lose, and a lot to gain.

British clubs don't nurture young players in the same way other clubs do - they're essentially preparing them to fail. If you look at the top 4 clubs in England, no-one has brought through an academy plaer in about 4 or 5 years. Buying them off another club who can afford to chuck in 16/17 year olds is the way forward in this day and age,.
