One question people - why would we have an option to buy Mascherano at 6 Million GBP?
That makes no sense. His market value is more in the region of 20 Million GBP, so I would assume that this would be his price were we to buy him after any loan deal (18 months?). Especially when you consider that we would not be purchasing him from a club.

I think I saw somewhere a price of 18m. being quoted after the months.

18 million? Surely we won't pay that much for him?
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

If we did I would expect Sissoko, Alonso or even Gerrard to move on.

It will probably be a three or four year deal after the loan deal. I can imagine that MSI will own him again after he has been with us and that they will get any money if we sell him to another club and that's why he available on the cheap and that's why Juve pulled out of any deal.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Liverpool were given hope of a breakthrough in their laborious efforts to sign Javier Mascherano from West Ham United last night when Fifa announced the Argentina international may be allowed to move to Anfield after all.

Rafael Benitez is anxious to strengthen his squad with the World Cup midfielder but has been frustrated in his attempts by world football's governing body, which prevents a player appearing for three clubs between 1 July and 30 June the following year.

Fifa regulations stipulate that while a player can register with a maximum of three clubs during that time, they can only play for two, and as Mascherano starred for Corinthians after the World Cup and before his astonishing move to West Ham in August, he is ineligible to play for Benitez's side. Only last week Fifa announced that the ruling was binding but, having received a written submission from Liverpool that contests the decision, the governing body has now confirmed it will consider a possible U-turn.

A Fifa spokesman said last night: "We have received correspondence from Liverpool and a case has now been opened."

Liverpool's detailed argument is supported by Mascherano's representatives, Media Sports Investments, the group founded by Kia Joorabchian who also brought Carlos Tevez to West Ham before his failed attempt to take over the east London club. Liverpool's case is that, as the midfielder has played just six minutes for the Hammers since October and has made only seven appearances in total, and none since Alan Curbishley became manager, leaving the asset idle on the sidelines represents a restraint of trade.

Liverpool also argue that precedents have been set on the three-club rule and there should be an allowance for Mascherano as he played in both the European and the South American seasons last year, with the latter's calendar extending beyond 1 Julyt.

Should Fifa grant an exception, the Argentine's move to Anfield would proceed instantly.

The Anfield directors have also sanctioned a deal for Blackburn Rovers' Lucas Neill, who could be involved in the Liverpool squad to face Chelsea on Saturday provided he resists greater financial offers from West Ham or Newcastle United.
I dont know about Mascherano, just not convinced.

Not talking about that post, it's just that I know he hates Argentinians.

Not necessarily. Just because he isn't convinced by a player, doesn't mean it's because of his nationality. To be honest, how can anyone be 100% convinced by Mascherano? He is still you, and hasn't performed at all in this league. From what i've seen of him at international level, he certain has the potential, and attributes to succeed, but that doesn't mean he will. I fully understand people having some reservations.

That said I think he would be a great signing.

I dont see the how people are comparing mascherano and veron as they are very different players.

Someone said veron was succesful in italy playing in cm and getting stuck in but a lot of the time when he was over there he played on the left of midfield and was allowed to drift like gerrad does when he plays on the right.Veron was not suited to the prem anyway but it didnt help that ferguson played him out of position, veron does his best work high up the field but ferguson had him playing with his back to goal and too deep imo.

Mascherano is a player who likes to sit back and break things up and is a decent passer.Does anyone seriously think mascherano is not playing because of his ability and that players like quasie are better then him?Mascherano is a player I always thought could handle the prem as when I have seen him play he seemed to like the tough games.

He models his game on makalele and I would say he is not as good as makalele definsivily but can improve and I would say he is a better passer.

can everyone else see this post? how can it possibly be a bad idea to take a loan punt on this guy? there's arguing about interesting contentious **** and then there's arguing for the sake of arguing. this thread falls in the latter camp. who thought shevchenko was going to be so abysmal in the premiership? trying to predict what's going to happen with mascherano is pointless - it's not like we're paying 30 million for him. there's also a possibility that rafa has done a bit more research than just watching him in the world cup...
