I'm neither Irish or Scottish so it makes no difference to me who he represents but I remember reading somewhere last week that his Grandfather always dreamed that he would play for Ireland and the kid made a promise to him.

If he wants to fulfill a promise to his Grandfather who has just died I say full respect to him.

When he gets picked for the A team that's when he will need to make his personal decision on whether he's Irish or Scottish and then you'll know his true colours.

If I was Scottish I wouldn't be too hard on him because he's made his decision for a good reason and if you treat him harshly you might drive away a good prospect for your national team.

However, the more important decision for him to make this month is whether he's a red or a fat greedy ****in Chelski. Then I'll tell you whether he can **** off and go to hell!!

There is a big big connection between the NW of Ireland the Irish speaking area , where this lads grandfather came from, and Glasgow. In the summer in this part of Ireland Scotish is the predominant accent. It not as simple as, where you were born, you play for.

And as for McGeady, he wasn't picked for Scotland underage because he didn't play for the Scottish schools. The FAI came along and asked him would he play for their association and he said cool.
Did you see the size off those chickens?

“He made a major impression in a training game by unleashing a 25-yard rocket that flew past Jerzy Dudek.
Jeez, my 2 year old daughter could score past Dudek the way he played recently !

Liverpool boss “very impressed” with McCarthy

          January 23, 2007

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez was blown away by the talent shown by Republic of Ireland youth international Jamie McCarthy during his recent trial at Melwood, according to the 16-year-old’s agent.

Glasgow-born McCarthy made his Ireland debut in Tuesday evening’s under-17 friendly against Italy at Whitehall.

The Hamilton Academical starlet has already been the subject of offers from Reading, Celtic and Liverpool – and the Reds’ Spanish manager was most impressed.

McCarthy’s advisor George Gray told Tuesday’s Irish Independent: ”Rafa Benitez was very impressed by him. He told me that he regarded James’ technique as better than Steven Gerrard’s was at the same age.

“He made a major impression in a training game by unleashing a 25-yard rocket that flew past Jerzy Dudek. Wherever he goes, I can see James playing first team football very quickly.”
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

          * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

Sounds like his agent might be seeing £ signs. He probably should go to Celtic, if he's good he'll be playing pretty quickly, and Celtic are guaranteed European footy each year. Move South when he's 21ish. He would obviously be insane to move to Chelsea....

Well that has to be horse****, what would Rafa know about Gerrard's technique when he was 17?

He was brought up with an Irish up bringing, his grandfather took him to celtic park, so I am sure he knows a more about Ireland than you give him credit for.

Cascarino playing for Ireland was a joke.
You could say exactly the same thing about the Irish in Liverpool - more people of Irish descent there than any other British city, Glasgow included (Liverpool is the UK's biggest Catholic Archdiocese). People like me for that matter, of 100% Irish extraction on both sides of the family, but I and other scousers in the same position I know don't really consider the Irish connection and think of ourselves as entirely English.

It is a fact, rather than an idealistic notion, that the descendants of anyone going from Ireland to Scotland or England do not remain Irish at all. They become Scottish/English. This Scottish kid is no more Irish than I am.

Rafa had all our reserve games in his video library at Valencia.

He's chosen Ireland so must feel himself to be Irish rather than Scottish.
It doesn't really matter what he "feels himself to be". He was born in Scotland, not Ireland, so he's not Irish.

Well from my experience, the predominant accent in Blackpool in the summer is Glaswegian, so by your definition any Glaswegian could qualify for England.

So what if an English couple have a baby whilst on holiday in say, France. Does that then make the kid French?

You're missing the point I think. If he was born and lived in France he would have had his birth registered there. There for he would be French. If he was born in France while on holiday and came back over 2-3 days later he would naturally have his birth registered in his home country. It's about where you reside and have your birth registered that counts as your nationality.

Fact of the matter is that this young guy isn't Irish and never will be.
