i stand to be corrected but I can't think of any new stadium that has a sponsor that also incorporates the old stadium name.
Didnt Arsenal move away from the Highbury area though? Also, what other stadium had so much added value in the original name?

Finally, if the naming rights bring in x million per year (ie "a great new player each year" as Gillett put it) doesn't that imply that the naming rights are on a 'so many years' basis.

Does that mean the stadium could be the Adidas Stadium, then the Toshiba Stadium then a few years later the Microsoft Stadium and so on. And wouldn't that be a bit weird.

So for continuity couldn't the new board say "we're sponsoring Anfield who wants it?" so it'd then be the Adidas Anfield, then a few years later the Toshiba Anfield etc. That way the Anfield name stays even if the sponsors of the stadium changes.

How else would it work in order to generate a year on year income into the future without the potential of renaming the stadium in its entirety every few years. Anyone?

I think one would sign a 10/15/20 year deal (Emirates = 10 years), then after about 8-9 years the sponsor would re-evaluate the teams value/status/success and whether it's worth renegotiating a deal. With Liverpool, success is guaranteed, especially now with a solid long-term strategy. So maybe one would be able to negotiate a longer deal, with a top sponsor, such as Adidas.

(To answer your question, yes, I would think it possible for the names to change after x years)

I genuinely cant believe so many posters dont seem to *care* if we sell our name.

It's not 'inevitable' and it certainly isn't a guarantee of success.

            that'd be well weird.

Hey, don't quote me on that, I have no idea. I don't even know whether the stadium will have a new name or whether there will be some other sort of deal. There could be any sort of outcome, maybe if we all try to wish really hard, it will all just stay the same

well i'm well happy to get money for players by calling it something Anfield, on the basis that every supporter would just think of it as Anfield anyhow.

it'd be odd if the name changed every few years tho. I've been watching Liverpool for nigh on 30 years and it's bizzare to think that the stadium could have been called 3 or 4 different things in that time.

What, with all that friggin barbed wire you can see at the bottom?! Looks like a dump to me, no class at all. Would never happen over here anyway, there's probably rules that restrict the angle of the stands or something. As long as it's not like that benfiica one, which looks practically flat...

So why bother if we'll all 'think of it as Anfield' anyway? Personally I think 'The Adidas Anfield Stadium' or whatever people are suggesting would sound bollocks. Arsenal fans all bitched at first at losing their beloved Highbury (which has similar reasonance for them as Anfield to us), but they've moved on now and at the end of the day it's a completely new stadium, so why shouldn't it have a completely new name?

No doubt some will call it blashphemy but after a year or so we'll all have got well and truly used to the new name, and Anfield will just be fond memories. Let's move into the future eh, remembering traditions and events etc is fine but clinging on to names is a bit sad really.

this was my point at the top of the thread. if for some reason there is a delay in a deal that suits, but we still need to sell the name as its seen as a crucial revenue stream to get rafa (or whoever further down the line) funds for players then it becomes a farce.

we should be looking at ways to do this- shirt sponsorship, new media revenues, better merchandising-or even shock horror, spending some of their own money to start with and see if Rafa can build sustained success first.

it should only be done as a last resort imo - the "your brand here" stadium just doesn't cut it
"At a football club, there's a holy trinity - the players, the manager and the supporters. Directors don't come into it. They are only there to sign the cheques"

eventually, any Prem team with a half-decent brand will have a sponsored stadium, it's standard in any US sport and it's crept into European football now too. It's a simple and easy way to raise £££, and will be even more common once everyone gets more used to the idea. Chelski would be straight there if they didn't have Abramovich's money, and Old Toilet will get the same treatment as soon as it becomes more acceptable...as long as the name isn't stupid I don't mind, especially as it's a completely brand new place anyway.

Correct. What matters is the people inside the stadium not the bricks & mortar or the frigging name of it...

We could go down the Aston Villa route. Their new owner has said that Villa Park will NEVER be renamed, but he is looking at maybe selling off naming rights to the stands. (The McDonald's Main Stand, Coca-Cola Kop etc).

Obviously we'd get less money than for the overall stadium naming rights, but this way we'd still have OUR stadium. Sort of.

                            Something to think about.

Why bother? I don't get the question. Because we'd get money for it by allowing some corporate nob to associate their company's name with the name Anfield.
