Gerrard and Carra set to play at Old Trafford

Liverpool stars confirmed for Old Trafford Clash

    13/02/2007 - 11:34:52 AM

Liverpool duo Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher will join David Beckham in the Europe XI line-up for next month’s celebration match at Old Trafford.

Italy’s World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi will take charge of the all-star side, who will tackle Manchester United in a match that will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Red Devils’ first participation in European competition and of a united Europe.

Beckham had previously indicated his willingness to play in the March 13 spectacular, for which all proceeds will go to charity.

And, while rearranged Premiership matches the following night mean there will be no chance for Lippi to draw on stars from Arsenal and Chelsea, Liverpool have agreed to release their two senior England internationals for the game.

“It is an honour for our club that two of our players have been selected to represent Europe,” said Reds manager Rafael Benitez.

“I know that they feel very privileged to be in the team and that they will enjoy playing alongside the top players from other clubs.

“It will be a nice experience for them and one I am sure they will remember with pleasure in years to come.”

Although his side are continuing to battle for honours on three fronts, Sir Alex Ferguson has already pledged to field a full-strength line-up, including Henrik Larsson in what could be his farewell United appearance.

And, while the precise European line-up is yet to be finalised, Lippi has expressed the hope most of his World Cup-winning squad will be at Old Trafford.

Can someone please explain to me why a special gala match is being held to commemorate Manchester United's 50 years of playing European football - during which time they have won as many European Cups as Nottingham Forest and Porto?

        Munich disaster - Manchester United
50 years of European Football - Uefa

I think united asked first to do the game and Uefa had planned to do something

Any way money raised goes to charity

The Game is a one-off. The whole situation for Uefa and Utd was just a coincidence. Right place and Right time

I hope it raises loads for charity but....why can't utd stage their own celebration of 50 years of European competition (half the time they didn't qualify) and commemoration of Munich.

A celebration of 50 years of the EU should be Western Europe vs Eastern Europe or north vs south not centred round one team (Utd) against the rest of Europe which makes them look kind of special.

Im fine with them holding a game but i have issues with Gerrard and Carra playing in a game that commemorates anything for them even if it si for charity.

First of all most of Man U's songs revlove about hating scousers, so why are they taking part in a celebration. Second of all any comemoration of Munich is their business. After all the sh!te we've taken over the last few years about hillsborough off them i don't think any of ours should do anything to commemorate Munich.

I don't think that the event was a funny one. . just don't think we should commemorate it. Just my opinion!

It's got nothing to do with us being better than that! I'm not saying mock them, i'm saying our boys shouldn' be involved. What is it we're better than?

And that's such a bullsh!t answer, which seems to be used whenever questions are asked about why our fans or players are doing this or that!

I agree with Jacko and Red Jedi - what the **** are our two most senior players (and two proper Scousers to boot) doing participating in some ****ty Manc love-in? What exactly do they have to celebrate anyway? It's pathetic.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

Your signature says it all really.
The definitive word in the original post was "Charity".
Manure players don`t abuse SG or Carra for being scousers, neither do their board.
Why punnish a Charity because Manure`s fans are moron`s?
You probably love the fact that Munich happened.
As a supporter of a club that has had so many tragadies you should be more supportive of SG and Carra when they decide to help commemrate a great team in the name of charity.
The "50 yrs in Europe" thing is non consequential.
If in the future Liverpool FC decided to hold a similar type game for charity to remember Hillsborough or Hysel and ManU players like Ronaldo volunteered to play, would you Boo them?
