Can you imagine the moaning on here if no Liverpool players had been picked.

Also - the support from ManU the club post-Hillsborough was exemplary. Ferguson attended memorials with his players, and they even stood in/alongside at times (Hospital visits ec) when it was overwhelming our boys. I've heard that it was very much understood and appreciated at the highest levels in LFC.

Sometimes we can all rise above the basest level, and I have no problem with Stevie and Carra doing that - althugh I do question the timing, mid-season.

Liverpool stars confirmed for Old Trafford Clash

            13/02/2007 - 11:34:52 AM

Liverpool duo Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher will join David Beckham in the Europe XI line-up for next month’s celebration match at Old Trafford.

Italy’s World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi will take charge of the all-star side, who will tackle Manchester United in a match that will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Red Devils’ first participation in European competition and of a united Europe.

Beckham had previously indicated his willingness to play in the March 13 spectacular, for which all proceeds will go to charity.

And, while rearranged Premiership matches the following night mean there will be no chance for Lippi to draw on stars from Arsenal and Chelsea, Liverpool have agreed to release their two senior England internationals for the game.

“It is an honour for our club that two of our players have been selected to represent Europe,” said Reds manager Rafael Benitez.

“I know that they feel very privileged to be in the team and that they will enjoy playing alongside the top players from other clubs.

“It will be a nice experience for them and one I am sure they will remember with pleasure in years to come.”

Although his side are continuing to battle for honours on three fronts, Sir Alex Ferguson has already pledged to field a full-strength line-up, including Henrik Larsson in what could be his farewell United appearance.

And, while the precise European line-up is yet to be finalised, Lippi has expressed the hope most of his World Cup-winning squad will be at Old Trafford.

            SG`s and Carra`s comments

"I feel proud that a coach like Marcello Lippi has selected me for the European team," Jamie Carragher comments. "It's a real honour."

"I'm looking forward to the match," Steven Gerrard adds. "It's a pleasure to play alongside the top players – especially if the match earns some money for charity."

The game is being staged on March 13.
