Zenden fights on as he snubs PSV
By JOHN EDWARDS - More by this author » Last updated at 23:57pm on 26th February 2007

Bolo Zenden joined Robbie Fowler in fighting to salvage his Liverpool career yesterday and took a calculated gamble by snubbing a move home to PSV Eindhoven.

While Fowler broke his silence over an increasingly uncertain Anfield future, and insisted he still had plenty to offer his home side, Zenden ignored warnings that he could be part of a summer clear-out and turned down a return to the club who launched his career 12 years ago.

Sensing the 30-year old may be growing disillusioned on the fringes of Rafa Benitez's squad, PSV manager Ronald Koeman promised him a starting place at the Phillips Stadium next season.

Zenden has yet to receive any assurances about being kept on by Benitez, when his two-year contract runs out in the summer, yet he still stunned Koeman by announcing that he would take his chances at Anfield.

"It is always tempting when a club tell you they want you," said the former Barcelona, Chelsea and Middlesbrough winger. "Especially when it is PSV, where I had four great seasons at the start of my career. It has come at the wrong time, though.

"I may return to Holland at some stage, but I'm not sure I'm ready to yet. I still feel there is more I can do in the Premiership, and that is where I want to stay."

Zenden's versatility may yet sway Benitez into opening talks on a new deal, though he has made Liverpool's starting line-up only once in the past three months and could be included in a ruthless cull of bit-part players.

Andriy Voronin's capture as back-up striker for next season is further indication of Benitez's eagerness to improve the quality of his overall squad, and Anfield insiders have predicted several departures as well as arrivals during the summer.

Fowler is as single-minded as Zenden about avoiding the axe after dismissing suggestions he could follow former England captain David Beckham to America and claiming his renowned finishing still matched up to Premiership requirements.

Adamant that he still has years left in him at the top, regardless of Benitez's eventual decision, the Liverpool striker ruled out a possible reunion with his one-time team-mate Steve Nicol at New England Revolution, and said: "I know it’s all a bit up in the air at the moment. I haven't spoken to anyone about the future, and to be honest I’m still just focusing on enjoying every minute I’m at Liverpool.

"I’ll sit down with people and think about next season when the time’s right, but although I’m not the youngest player at the club, I’m not that old either, at 31. I still feel I’ve a few years left in me yet and I’ll be carrying on for longer.

"Some people have mentioned moving into coaching and I even saw a move to the USA mentioned, but I honestly haven’t even thought about anything like that yet.

"I still think I’ve a lot to contribute as a player and I’m just focused on playing as much as I can between now and the end of this season. There’s a lot to play for."

Fowler's immediate target is to try and keep his place against arch-rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday, though he is maintaining a realistic stance.

"I’m not kidding myself," he said. "I wouldn’t expect to be starting that game, but to be involved in any way would be great."

Fowler's prospects of at least a place on the bench were boosted when it was confirmed Peter Crouch had broken his nose against Sheffield United.

He said in the Echo last week his deal runs out in the Summer.

Say what you want about his football ability but every player senior and kids we sign always seems to say the same thing - Bolo is always about helping them settle, talking to them etc, he seems really good in that regard.

Yeah, I have noticed that too, he seems like a decent bloke, probably good for the dressing room.
