Spending big money on a player

After Kevin Keegan left Liverpool, Paisley broke the English transfer record to bring Kenny Dalglish to the club. We replaced a top class player, with an even better one.

Since Owen left Liverpool, not one player has matched his scoring record. I don't want him back, I think it's too much of a risk, but he was our top scorer from 1998 to 2004, averaging a goal every other game, and finding someone to do that consistently will not come cheap.

This isn't spending money for the sake of it; it's spending money to ensure that we have a player with the ability to convert pressure like we created yesterday (and numerous times this season) into goals.
"The definition of insanity is not running into the same wall again and again; it's expecting a different result every time you do it."

If a player like Eto'o becomes available for £30m-£35m then I think that Rafa would get the money to sign him.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

      All I can say is.
I hope we flex our muscles and sign a top top quality striker.
      Eto'o would do just fine.
I wonder who would be leaving though along with Eto'o.
Bellamy to Villa perhaps for about £10-12 m?

actually, the more i think about it, and the ammount of playing time he is getting, it could well be Crouch who gets shown the door.

We can probably get around £20m for Bellamy and Crouch in the summer and that would probably be enough to sign Alves.

20 million? Are you having a laugh?

Anyway, we won't be selling 2 strikers to pay for a right back/midfielder. If we sell 2 strikers we'll need to bring 2 more in.

We would easily get that for them two.

we need a proven goalscorer - if he costs us £20-30m then so be it - its better than spending £13m on 2 strikers (bellers & crouch) who are not capable of scoring more than 10 goals in the league every season.

I fail to see what Bellamy has done wrong.

He had a good game yesterday, and while he will never be that 20-25 goal a season striker we need (we knew that when we signed him), he shouldn't be sold in the summer just because now we can apparently afford some bigger name who probably won't put in half the work rate he does.

Bellamy deserves at least another season.

do we though? Is that what we really need? What proven goalscorer have Man United got this season while they are 9 points clear? What proven goalscorer did Chelsea have last season and the season before when they totally carved up the league?

How many titles did we win when Fowler and Owen were scoring lots of goals?

Sometimes I think its the easiest thing to say but I think we need strengthening in other areas as well as up front. I am not convinced that our problems will suddenly be solved by somebody that we think might score 20 league goals in a season. The last 2 "proven" goalscorers we bought were Cisse, and Morientes

He is undoubtedly our best striker this season!
