check out the card count on Cole in comparrison to Riise?.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

      * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

Going forward, I'd say Cole is equally as good as Riise, but then the stats say otherwise.
You then take into account loyalty, wages and fitness, which all go in Riise's favour.

Just depends what people look for in a LB I suppose
as for who's the better defender, i looked at yellow cards and fouls committed in club comps from 2001/2002

        Yellow Cards:
        Cole: 34
        JAR: 6

        Red Cards:
        Cole: 2
        Riise: 0

        Fouls committed:
        Cole: 90
        JAR: 51

        Fouls suffered:
        Cole: 88
        JAR: 100

completely unscientific but JAR gets far less yellow and red cards, commits far less fouls and suffers a shade more fouls than Cole

you mean what we learn from these figures is that the "better defender" Cole has to commit far more illegal challenges on opposition players

              Makes sense.

Cole was rubbish at the WC (yet people were calling him Englands best!) I thought, had absolutely no final ball whatsoever.

That's 8.5 yellows a season which is about 1 every 4 games. Dirty little fecker

And who's ever seen Cole run the entire length of the pitch and unleash a cracker like we saw yesterday?

To be honest Cole was a woeful tackler when he first came into the Arsenal side. He has calmed down and improved immensely. He still carries a bit of a reputation with referees though.

I have to say I think Cole is a far better player than Riise. I'm going to guess that a lot of Riise's assists are parried shots - which is about as unscientific as many of the other claims in this thread I know.

I think Ashley Cole offers genuine pace and doesn't let his attacking instincts put him out of position all that often. He is also far better at passing/keeping possession than Riise. I think Riise is a good player but Cole is world class - I might even give him credit as the best LB in the world.

JAR for me hands down.A full back also needs to chip in with a fair share of assists and goals in a season and JAR wins that hands down imo.
